In a discussion last night a friend was wondering if she could volunteer to help the areas affected by the tsunami. She informed us that most of the humanitarian groups would rather have her donate money than her time.
Is there a reason for turning down her time and preferring just a cash donation? Insurance reasons, training her, etc? I can't imagine there are too many volunteers. Maybe so.
Your thoughts...

It might be a liability issue. Or more likely, cash is just a higher priority, to purchase supplies, then getting actual volunteers. Honestly, the price of your friends plane ticket can probably do more good then your friend can, despite her best intentions.

I would be more able to volunteer than offer up money, but really what does my $50, 100, 200 dollars mean compared to my volunteering in time and energy? Wouldn't volunteering yield more when compared to this? How does a person volunteer? A nice list would be helpful as you might spur some in here to offer up their muscle and time. I think I would, but my wife may have second thoughts on the topic when considering the safety issue.

travel expenses, training, liability, language training... all of it makes it not worth it. just pay up. i'm willing to bet that many of these charities have an asston of people on staff just waiting for something to get them up and out. they just need the funding.

No sense having more people in the areas that aren't fully trained. Not a whole lot of resources. I'd say for the vast majority of people, giving money at this point beats giving time. Lots of countries are sending care workers and military people who are better equipped and trained to deal with such a disaster.
