I plan on relocating to the Bay Area this spring to be closer to family. I will do this with or without a job, as I am lucky enough to be able to live off the profit of a real estate sale.

It's no secret that the Bay Area was ravaged by the dot-bomb tech recession, but I hear it has recovered to some degree. I'm curious to find out what the current job market is like.

I am an experienced (10 years) user interface designer and information architect. My experience has been almost entirely web-based; mostly large scale marketing web sites and web-based software. I currently work for an A-list interactive agency in NYC.

Given my background, and the kind of work I do, should I concentrate my job search efforts on San Jose (Silicon Valley) or on San Francisco? How long should I expect to search to find a job?

Thanks for reading this. Any input would be appreciated.

It really depends on what kind of company you are looking at working for. Keep in mind the costs and benefits of working and living in each area. SF meaning less car use and expenses, more mass transit, SJ meaning you'd probably need a car to get your everywhere. There are tons of HQ's in the area, EA, Real, Tivo, Google, Ebay, Apple, Sun, Oracle, PeopleSoft, etc. but if they ain't hiring I guess there's not much you can do except the late shift at Domino's Good luck though.

From what I hear from friends living in the area, and working in the industry, I would not move without a job offer at the moment. While you might have savings you also might want to purchase a new home in the future and these savings will help you get a much better mortgage deal.
