go to http://www.spamgift.com/
it seems to be a legit site of the company spam.
but it looks like they sell FOOD and like 12897312987 different clothes/accessories with a big SPAM logo on them ? wtf who would even think of purchasing such items when the company is like.. a lamo food company like that WTF????
and why would anyone want to wear SPAM shirts.. SPAM now has a negative meaning in our society.
who would buy that?
so is the site a joke? I sure hope so..

....SPAM existed.
it's a budget canned meat and was a staple of the American diet for many years around the 40's and 50's (or so I'm told.) The value of it's name is "retro" or nostalgia or joke.

In the U.S., a can of SPAM is said to be consumed every 3.1 seconds.
Wow, I had no idea it was still so popular. I think I'm gonna trek over to Austin for the next SPAM Jam, see you there.

The short shall inherit the earth. Just you wait. You won't see us coming. We'll pop out from under tables, beds, and closets in hordes. So you're tall, huh? You won't be so tall when I chew off your ankles. Mofo

Spam originated right here in Minnesota. But it's actually all over the world. My parents told me that when they lived in China in 1981-82, they used to get cans of spam-like meat (same thing, different name) because the meat available in the markets was just hanging out in the air for who knows how long and was probably full of some pretty nasty diseases.
Never had it myself, though. But I'll probably get some next time I have to go grocery shopping. Hey, it's cheaper and easier to cook than regular meat and I don't have much income.

Hormel's home base is, in fact, Austin Mn.
Only Spam recipe you need: take one can Spam, slice it thin (maybe about 1/4 thick), fry in skillet. Enjoy with approx. 4 fried eggs (must have runny yolks, over medium if ya wanna be technical), fried in spam fat. Cook up some hash browns while you are at it. Enjoy with black coffee.
If any fried spam survives the ensuing feeding frenzy, it is awesome as a sandwich on toast with mayo.
Mmmmmmm... spam...

SPAM (spiced ham) has a fanatic following in Hawai'i. It's very popular still.

It is no joke. SPAM apparel is quite popular in, at least, SPAM Town, USA (Austin, MN) which is where I grew up. There is a yearly festival that corresponds with July 4th called SPAM Jam. I have one of the SPAM shirts and I wouldn't be surprised if nearly everyone in Austin has at least one.
And SPAM is the product, not the company. Hormel is the company. That's sort of like people saying "MAC makes I-pods."

While it is spiced ham, as you say, it's also shoulder pork and ham, which could also be where the name came from. Since they held a contest for it, I'm pretty sure they don't know where the name truly came from, and am also pretty sure they have deliberately not chosen one official meaning. But I'm just pulling memory out now. I could always make another trip to the SPAM museum to find out.
There's always the joke that "Some Parts Are Meat."

I have read that SPAM is a huge cause of obesity in the pacific, polynesia, micronesia and so on. It's powerful stuff in a little can.

Have you heard of KAM? Same stuff. Anyway, I've heard of SPAM since I was a kid (grew up in Nova Scotia). Weird Al Yankovic even did a song about it.
