Reuters Article
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - Veterinary officials confirmed Canada's second case of mad cow disease on Sunday, but U.S. authorities said the finding would not affect their plans to resume imports of young Canadian cattle.
Final laboratory results on the suspect dairy cow came just days after the United States, Canada's largest export market, said it would begin to relax its ban on imports of Canadian cattle under 30 months of age.
A U.S. Agriculture Department spokeswoman said the new case did not change the agency's risk assessment of Canada's beef or its plans to reopen borders to the young cattle, which are considered to have less chance of developing the disease because of its long incubation period.
"We don't anticipate any changes," Alisa Harrison said.
Canada's first home-grown case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease was found in May 2003 and cost export-dependent farmers an estimated C$5 billion ($4.2 billion) as trade partners closed their borders to Canadian beef and cattle.
...
And yet the US is still going to allow imported Canadian beef. ARG!
Looks like I'll have to find out the origin on any filet mignons I plan to eat for a while.

buddy, you really know very little.
Cows are transferred across borders all the time.
A cow that has mad cow in Canada may have been born, raised, and contracted the disease in the US.
Authorities often have no idea where it originated, the US or Canada.
That's why they'll still import from us. Just because we detected it doesn't mean it's not an American farm's fault. And vice versa for that matter. The market is too integrated and unfortunately not very well enforced.

Nope, the borders are closed to cattle from Canada currently

Nope. Not yet anyway. From the article:"The first U.S. case, found in Washington state in December 2003, also affected a cow that had been born in Canada."

They know where all cases in the US have originated. Canada.

From a toronto star article:
The 10-year-old Alberta animal was a dairy cow but more of a family pet and not in commercial milk production, a CFIA veterinarian confirmed last week.
not a big deal.

You do know there have been plenty of cases in the US, right? You also know that the ban on canadian beef had nothing to do with mad cow, right? You're also aware of the sloppy practices of the US beef industry which result in many diseased cows going through the system? You're also aware that many of those aren't labeled as "downers" and thus go to consumption? You also know that the canadian case was a sick cow and was never going to be consumed?
Didn't think so.
Now the canadian beef industry isn't perfect and there are some bad apples, but our track record is far superior as is our meat. Unfortunately the US tends to try to screw us as much as possible when it comes to trade, specifically that which the US also produces.
Oh, and I work in the business so I know all of this first hand.

Considering the kind of food used in fast food chains where - and I think it's safe to say this - the majority of American's eat from, this latest finding of BSE is the least of your worries.
Besides, the finding of this infected animal is proof that screening is working.
I'd also like to point out that instead of pointing our finger at the British - the article points out Canada's originally infected animals most likely came from Britian in the late 80's - we're finding solutions to the problem that might very well save beef industries worldwide.
...And when I do eat beef, it is beef purchased from a farm I know uses organic feed for their cattle.

It is true... there is another confirmed case of mad cow disease in a 10 year old cow in Alberta. This cow would never be going to the US anyway, and it is believed that the cow may have developed mad cow disease years ago before feeding practices were changed.
Incidently, if you look you will find that in August 1997 the United States and Canada banned the use of brains and spinal cords, the tissues that carry the disease, in animal feed. This cow simply is from before that ban.
It is also true that the US is re-opening their border to Canadian beef soon. However, if you take the time to look, you will find that Canadian beef producers will be able to start shipping live cattle under the age of 30 months... UNDER the age of 30 months, to the US. This will begin again on March 7th I believe.
This 10 year old cow is irrelevant to the border re-opening between the US and Canada, as it is from a generation from before safe feeding practices were established, and it is too old to cross the border anyway.
Furthermore, there have been cases of mad cow disease found originating in American Beef also. Japan still has a ban on US Beef, one they placed in 2003, October I think.
South Korea imposed a ban on American beef imports after the outbreak of mad cow disease in the U.S.
In July, South Korea also banned the import of oranges and other fruits from the Santa Ana area of California's Orange County after U.S. officials discovered fruit flies there.
When are certain ignorant Americans going to realize they live in glass house and shouldn't be throwing stones???? The US goes through all the same trials and tribulations that the rest of the world goes through, yet some feel the need to try to prove their superiority without knowing the facts.

Hey now this is Kilbey's post... no making sense, or "being rational" just be absurdly anti-Canadian, ridiculously nationalistic, and inhumanly ignorant and things will go along just fine.

It's not anti-canadian. Didn't you read that earlier? It's an anti-canadian beef thread!
All mad cow cases that have occurred in the USA have originated in Canada. Do you see the trend.
Hence I am anti-canadian beef.
I like canada. There's just a couple bad apples who are spoiling the country really.
It's a very pretty country and a nice place to vacation. It's like Mexico, I just wouldn't want to live there. Ever.

If I wanted to insult you, I'd do it directly. Stop being overly sensitive.
When the borders are open, there is a free flow of cattle through cattle auctions where trading cross-border occurs. This is why Canada has been unfortunate enough to obtain cattle from Britain that has the disease, therefore hurting our industry. Don't imagine your industry to be any better because they didn't happen to win the auction for that particular cow, call it luck.
"The first U.S. case, found in Washington state in December 2003, ALSO affected a cow that had been born in Canada." - Notice it's not "WAS THE RESULT OF a cow that had been born in Canada."
As for "they know..." just for my further education, prove it.
And yeah, a lot of things are well regulated in theory, but in practice I can't blame either industry for not being able to track down specific cattle readily or completely effectively. The volume is huge.
You don't seem to realize that this is not a Canadian problem, this is a problem with the entire system and method by which cattle are processed for mass consumption. The US is not immune, nor is any industry. We're only the most recent to be affected.
And as for your "DON'T EAT CANADIAN BEEF!!!," when was the last time you pass on a steak? Just keep chewing, friend.
(there, now I've insulted you.)

Came back? I was only abroad for a few months. As to vmarks, what planet are you currently residing on? That guy is about as clued up as bread bin. I can't remember ever reading so many posts, in one forum, where virtyally everybody thought he was at fault, except of course his fanbase (you).
I'm at a loss as to where to tackle that guy's other-worldy opinions, thankfully he seems to be in hiding. His problem, is that he can't take reality, so he holes up in his mythical palace of stupidity. How many smacks to the head did he take in here, more than you have.

Back up a minute, **** face. You started al this sh!t by calling me bitter, and talkng about some smackdown, and some guy called vmarks.
If you don't want slapped about, badly, then don't go around getting personal. I never attacked you, you came right at me like a fly to sh!t. Why not keep your petty grudges to yourself?
You think I'm tough on here? I'd slap you down in real life if tried to act the fool around me. I don't use the Net to pretend a thing, I could back it up any day, and I know you'd be picking your pride up from the ground. That's a given.

Since that first link took me to a post of Pachead.
Edit: First link goes to your post, second is Pachead Your one is just a silly one, so has little bearing on people agreeing with zimmer to any great length.

You sure I started this version? You sure?
Hmm
It's funny how the only "bad" thing one can dredge up about Canada, is Mad-Cow disease. Still, it's a lot better than the US', "Mad-Person's Disease". Seems to be rife amongst Republican

That is the post I responded to. Don't throw rocks if you don't want them thrown back.

Again, you are being pretentiously silly. You could not slap me tough guy. So stop pounding your chest. BTW I am a Republican American.

Is that a post directed at you, you fool? Is that a reply to you? Was that about you? No, so get a grip, kid.
Any stones I cast, were hurled in multiple directions, you threw a boulder directly at me.

Uh, how do you know what I am agreeing on? You have no clue as you said so yourself.
I am not speaking about Canada. Just one Canadian in here. That has a habit of constantly making silly Anti-American posts. So much so, he looks obsessed.
The Canadian posts didn't sprout up till WELL after that. That is what this is about.
Why don't you ask Kilbey yourself?
How does it feel to get smacked down in the Lounge instead of the PF?
