HP and Panasonic are working together to make it easier for consumers to use DVD media between their digital consumer electronics and PCs by incorporating DVD+R and DVD-RAM formats into the companies' respective DVD products. By eliminating format issues and confusion about which media to use, both companies expect that consumer interest in DVD recording will grow significantly. The companies also plan to cooperate on developing products and solutions that support the Blu-ray Disc Association high-definition optical disc format. The goal is to create the overall best user experience in the growing recordable DVD market, as well as in the future Blu-ray Disc market.
I can honestly say I didn't see that one coming. (Panasonic already supports DVD+R.)

I think people are already more interested in dual layer and Blu-ray than anything else.

Nope. Only geeks like us are interested in dual-layer and Blu-Ray.
The home set top DVD recorder market is the Next Big Thing™. Blu-Ray for Joe Consumer is still a long way off, while DVD recorders are now starting to take off in consumer retail sales. As for dual-layer, it is going to be of interest only to the computer market for quite some time.

DVD-RAM holds dominant market share in standalone consumer DVD recorders:
Market indicators strongly point to DVD-RAM as the format of choice for consumer DVD recorders. According to The NPD Group, a market information company, DVD-RAM recorders hold a dominant market share, accounting for 59.2 percent of stand-alone consumer recorders sold in the U.S. between January 2001 and September 2003 and 58.9 percent of those sold in 2003.
Anyways, just go to your local Future Shop and you'll see what I'm talking about. Usually, half the set top recorders there are DVD-RAM/-R.
