I know I should post this in an audio/video forum somewhere but they are all blocked at my work. So, I will post here because I am certain I will get some good advice.
I went last evening and baught a new Denon 1710 DVD player. I brought it home, hooked it up and the video is great. The problem is the audio is awful. There is no bass and it seems to fluctuate in clarity. I really don't know how to explain the fluctuation but it just seems to fade in and out. It is hardly noticable but it does happen. I have the DVD audio running through an Onkyo receiver via an optical line. Is this the problem of the DVD player, my cables, or what? I have had a cheap DVD player and it sounded great. Then I replace it with a fairly nice one and the sound is awful. Should I take it back or is it my cables? Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you used the same cables with your prior player, then it can't be them. Google to see if there were any problems with your new player - maybe a bad batch floating around. I'd test the cables with a different system, and then exchange the player if they seem fine.

Do you mean the sound drops in and out? It's a digital connection so it shouldn't fade in and out. It's either there or not.
