I just bought the new PlayStation 2 (you know, the one that's 75% smaller).

Anyway, I wanted to buy the Sony DVD remote for it, but I wasn't sure if the old Sony DVD remote works with this one, or do I have to buy a new version to work with this current model?

So anyone out there with the new Sony Playstion 2 that uses a DVD remote, let me know.

Also, how do you guys feel about the quality of the DVD player. It seems pretty good to me, but since DVD players are so cheap, I might be better off just getting a 100 dollar DVD player that I would assume is better quality than one built into a video game machine. But maybe not. Maybe it's the same thing.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Depends on your TV and the cables you use to hook it up with.

It's close, and unless you're playing DVDs on a larger TV (36"+) that handles 480p, it'll be about the same (I don't like the way the PS2 handles most progressive scan material). The main issue, however, is that it puts a lot of extra wear and tear on your PS2.

I got one for Christmas, and I'd love to know the answer to the remote question as well. Anyone?

I don't even own a game console, but it took me all of TWO CLICKS on sony.com to get to the Compatibility Chart that shows that the DVD remotes for PS2 are compatible with the slim version, too.

Why am I always the only person who thinks to look on the manufacturer's own site for basic info?!?

There are two official PS2 DVD remotes. Both work with the new, slim PS2.

However,
The IR Receiver Unit and CD-ROM included with the DVD Remote Control (for PlayStation 2) with IR Receiver Unit (SCPH-10170) are not needed for use with the SCPH-50000 and -70000 series of the PlayStation 2 console.
and
The Open button on the DVD Remote Control (for PlayStation 2) (SCPH-10410) cannot be used to open/close the disc cover of the SCPH-70000 series of the PlayStation 2 console.
Taken from SCEA's compatibility chart.

SCPH-50000 is the sans-FireWire PS2 and SCPH-70000 is the new, slim PS2.

Dunno, perhaps cause you're so durn smart?

My real question that I didn't have the smarts to ask is the the new little one has an IR reciever on the front and the PS DVD remote looks like it comes with a IR reciever to plug in to the controller slot (I think). So I guess the question is, do I have to by a playstation DVD remote or will any work with it. To please Tooki, I'll look myself at Sony- I just couldn't find a whole lot of info about the thing out there.

I have to admit a big part of the issue is that I wanted a PlayStation for CHristmas about as much as I wanted a date with Mike Tyson, so my enthusiasm for the enterprise is a touch lacking. And before anyone starts in with the "well if you don't want it...," it was a gift form my wofe so I have to pretend to like it- it stays here.

Might be smarter to sell it on ebay and get the new one, it is only about $130 US for the slim one and it comes with the network adapter. I just sold my network adapter from the old one for about $40 and the PS2 for $70 so I really paid next to nothing to get this smaller PS2.
