I think the Superamerica is the dumbest wannabe Super Hero name for a car, espcially a Ferrari.

The SuperAmerica reminds me of the '74 Dino my ex-girlfriend's dad had. They went a bit 'retro' with this new design, it seems.

I still think the Lamborghini Gallardo looks nicer. I find it hard to appreciate the front end monster-nostrils and the nasty back end. The 360 modena was beautiful. this back end is enzo-wannabe and i hate how the tail lamps arent flush like the 360. im not a fan of the headlamps either. seems to narrow for that fender curve.

Lamborghini Gallardo.

I have a dumb question...

I am not a car freak but i can appreciate a cool design. I understand the new roadsters and fast coups have special design to optimize speed and let them go faster because the engines are already so powerful.

These things cost upwards of 50,000 bucks!

Let's say a ghetto fab car maker like Kia for instance has a history of making aaverage cheap cars. Nothing wonderful, nothing absolutely horrific. (I'm using Kia as an example, supstitute another B or C class car company in here if you're ticked).

Can't they make a really cool looking roadster or coupe type car but just slap in a average engine? I KNOW THIS IS LAME... But other than that, would that not sell? I live in NYC, most of the time you're going to be driving less than 60 miles per hour.

Let's say $12,000 super looking cool roadster with a rather slow engine...

They make 'kit cars' for this reason. You can take a Pontiac Fiero and turn it into a Lamborghini/Porsche/etc. Some look decent, but deep down you'll know it's still a Fiero.

I was thinking of the Fiero as well. It was a fun car to drive, though. Low to the ground, handled pretty well. Sure it dinna have the oomph, but still.

Pity about their engine fire problem thogh.

OK, i do not understand the car person's mentality then.
i would want a car that is cool to me. a design i think is cool.
i don't care if it goes fast because i can't go fast in my city. if i was to pay more, i would pay for an engine that was better in quality rather than speed.

i think this type of mentality is holding your industry back then. instead of every car looking great (especially small non-family cars), all you guys think is... "it's a kit car, it's whack."

i would prefer my car to have better mileage than speed.

That's why I said "R34"

But yes, the R35 is going to have more brawn than beauty. I'll still love it though.

And that will run you a mere $90,000.

I think the Skyline GT-R is a nice car but WAY overrated. The only reason people drool about the skyline is because it's not available in the US so everyone you see is on TV and has had tens of thousands of dollars of work done to it. Unless you're willing to pay $150,000 for one, it's a heavy, overbuilt righthand-drive tank that's not exceptionally fast and guzzles gas. Me, I'm anxious to see what the 2006 Corvette Z06 has in store. Rumors are at least 500 hp from a 427 cid V8 with titanium rods and dry sump, and I think it will cost around $65,000.

Ferraris are great cars but they are more about the image than performance. You don't want to have a Ferrari (a modern one, at least) unless you want to scream, "I HAVE MONEY!!" to everyone who sees you. I consider them the Gucci of automobiles, which is fine. But not what I want.

great point on the skyline and great point on ferrari's ... same goes for lamborghini and so forth.

on thing about skylines and any other car in their class (supra) is that they are painfully slow when they are stock. i've seen supra's get raped by lightly tuned civic's. well .. maybe not lightly. i think, when it comes to these cars. there's really two two fields. bang for the buck (CORVETTE tops that list, mitsubishi evolutions and subaru STi's) and then there's the cushy performance (bentley, ferrari, lambo, aston) ... beautiful performance machines that wrap you in luxury. seen more as a status symbol as well.

i dont understand how people can complain about the interior of the corvette. i love the interior. could it be made better? sure. compare the corvette with a cushy luxury sports/gt car. one that has similar performance specs. now, take the difference in cost, and re do the interior

Everyone's seen a bad driver, and everyone has been a bad driver at one point in time. A 500 HP Supra can be in the 14-15 second range with a bad driver but with a good driver be in the 11 second range. So hold onto that supra comment Then you take that lightly tuned civic to the freeway and see which triumphs there.

Skylines, not my choice in cars, but how many other cars do you know that can hold 1000 HP on their stock block? That is what sets them and the Supra up as droolable cars.

And a guy in a $65K Z06 does not register "I have money *and* a midlife crisis?" Yeah, sure. Great car? Sure is and will likely to continue to be in C6 guise. Best bang for the buck? Perhaps. The car for those who want the ultimate ride and even deeper pockets? Not close.

Picking on an out-of-production-for-how-many-years-now Supras? How about we go back in time ('94) and compare oranges to oranges, eh? I do not remember them being described as slow, even in stock twin turbo form. And have you seen what the kids can do with a single turbo and a Supra? I have no particular love for the car, but respect is more than due to a great car it was. There is a reason why the Supra is still much sought out even today; 69camaro has the answer.

Right, and like I said I think both the Skyline and Supra are nice cars. They are decent in stock form and have a lot of upgrade potential. BUT, they are both iron blocks so unless you are actually going to crank the power way up, they are overbuilt. And the single-turbo dyno queens that are so awe-inspiring are anything but tractable, not to mention illegal for use on the street. Very few supras and skylines are actually making close to 4-digit power, but it seems like both vehicles have gained a reputation for being being that powerful.

We only officially got the V-Spec here, which rides a bit hard for my liking. Nice leather seat upgrade, mind.
Jap M-Spec with UK seats would do it for me.

Not really correct. A stock GT-R will eat a Ferrari (pretty much any Ferrari) in real terms on real roads. It's the exceptional handling that does it (I know you guys in the US wouldn't know a good handling car from a pair of wet Y-fronts, but let's not go there again) - these thing drive like they're on rails and are supremely easy to sort once they let go (much easier than a 360).
Also, they're overbuilt for a reason. Jap companies have a voluntary power limit. Nissan got around this by engineering the Skyline specifically to take major upgrades very cheaply.

Pause for thought: There's probably no Skylines (the GT-R version, anyways) in the UK with less than 500 BHP, and they'll all have cost less than that $65,000 you just quoted - even with the upgrades.
