"Apple introduces Mac mini. New member of Mac family Slot-load Combo optical drive. Play DVDs, burn CDs. Queit. Tiny, FireWire, ethernet, USB 2.o, both DVI/VGA output. Very tine. Height is half the size of an iPod mini. BYODKM. Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, Mouse."
Let's hope the price and availability is right.
Can't wait to see pics.
Update:
"First one is $499: 1.25GHz 256MB/40GB More memory and larger hard drive for $599. Will ship on January 22. Ships in a box smaller than the regular iPod box."

You know, I really dislike Steve Jobs. Really, I do. A lot. For what he and his lackeys did to the Mac in the early days, and for his general artsy-fartsy-holier-than-thou personality.
But he's really knocked it out of the park this time. You go Steve.

Yes, but the quotes posted above are wrong. Another live feed site says both models will have 256mb memory but the $599 model will have and 80gb drive and a 1.42mhz G4 vs 40gb and 1.25mhz G4.

wow
Apple has a winner here DEFINATELY... market share will definately increase with this.
hats off on the mac mini.
I will be ordering one (probably the 1.42 model with the 80 gig drive) to replace my old sawtooth g4 400 mhz tower which is just too slow anymore at my office.
very nice job Apple!!!!!
I don't think this will canibalize the tower market..... My main computer is a 1.42 dual g4. I'm waiting on the 4.0 G5 dual before replacing it.

Mac mini looks awesome. Wish I had an excuse to get one! The video card is kind of measly, but you don't get much graphics power on PCs at this price either so I don't really mind.
At this price and design, it might finally be the Mac that gets a few holdouts I know to switch over. You can even upgrade to a superdrive! Definitely a from me. Just imagine how popular these will be with college students. Or, for example, my gf's parents... who only need a computer that can connect to their existing LCD monitor, with a dvd burner, and web browsing capability. They'd buy a Mac, but didn't have a viable option until now, and for only a few hundred bucks...
The iPods look cool, but are useless to me. Same with iWork and iLive 05.

Well, it's not the media server people were talking about, though it doesn't look like it should be too difficult to whip up a set of software that would allow it to serve this purpose. Something along the lines of MythTV could help greatly here.
Either way, I never thought I'd see the day when Apple actually priced a product competitively. I'm glad to be proven wrong.

It's the same chip that's in the present iBook (same amount of VRAM too). It's ok, I was simply hoping for a 9600.

Not to be pissy ... but if you add an Apple keyboard and mouse and superdrive, it will come to $757 .. only $142 less than the comparable eMac .. which has more ports, a monitor (obviously), stereo speakers and has memory slots that are user upgradeable. In other words ... the "raw" price looks good but it really isn't a better value for what it is than the eMac.
Still, GREAT to have this option for people who don't need all that other stuff. I'm going to look VERY seriously at the machine for purchase after my tax refund rolls in. The size is just plain phenomenal and would be perfect for my purposes (which is, taking my computer with me when I go out of town etc .. but not really needing a laptop .. I don't need to be able to use my machine while traveling but it'd be sweet to have with me once I get there )

WOW!!!!!! Now I have an excuse to get my mom a Mac. This is GREAT! She is someone who always compalins about space. Well this will definitely SAVE space. With a wireless mouse and Keyboard you can't go wrong with this. Damn you Apple. Now I have something else to spend money on. There goes my Tax refund.

My predictions: - Mac Mini - This thing will freaking fly. We won't see a G5 Mini until they redesign the case, though: just as with the lamp-style iMac and the PowerBooks, the current case just won't accommodate a G5 processor. Thermal issues are the main problem here.
Expect a cheap keyboard/mouse combination to come along very soon. I don't think we'll see keyboard/mouse/screen combinations, though. This is meant to target switchers or people who haven't upgraded in a long time, not people who update their Macs religiously.
- iWork - This will be popular among Keynote users and completely new users, but it won't convert many AppleWorks users in its present state. If a spreadsheet comes along later, then it'll start converting AppleWorks folks.
- iPod Shuffle - This will do well for the first few weeks, but probably won't have as much stsying power as the other iPods. It's a good value, but the lack of any screen or navigation at all will cause people to balk.

A few comments: - The Mac mini is great, but one thing is bothering me: "Memory upgrade must be performed by an Apple Authorized Service provider." And get this: the 1GB RAM option on store.apple.com will set you back $425! (The 512MB option is a not-too-unreasonable $75.)
- Still no usable mouse, huh? You'd think this would've been a good time to finally ADD A FREAKIN' BUTTON OR TWO.
- I hope the iPod shuffle has ways to navigate large lists of songs; for instance, something like the "skip to next album" feature that my MP3 CD player has (short click + long click on the "next" button). Because not everyone's going to want to use it in random mode.
(Apologies if this is a duplicate posting; the server is bogged down and I don't know if my first attempt to post made it through.)

The Mac Mini would be cooler if you could buy several of them, stack them on top of eachother like Legos (there would be connection ports on top and the bottom for this sort of thing), and then use Apple's high performance X-whatever-it-is-called to have a nice mini-cluster.

and you gotta add ram, that is the only thing wrong with this machine, windows users will get all excited about it and then it will run dog slow due to the lack of ram, and they will go back to thier windows boxes =(
but add ram and thats one hell of a little machine =) I will get one for sure eventually
very spiffy
iPod flash? I could see the wife using for running for sure, but she already has the mini

It's for switchers and mac holdouts, you wont find real power in it... although, by all standards, it does all you need it to do. I wish the memory was higher though... at least 512megs.
OOOPS, I just read that it supports upto a gig.
Edit: wow, you guys are fast.

This is all true, if you replace your existing keyboard, mouse, and screen. This model seems targeted at switchers, though, and they already have keyboards, mice, and screens.
iPods were Switcher-bait. Now, behold the trap.

But the eMac SUCKS, has the worst display I've ever seen. I'd rather supply my own than have to look at that thing all day.
