Will this really not work with any DVI mac? why not?

If not, anyone know of a cheap DVI or VGA to Composite or S-Video Adapter? I'm having no luck at all.

I believe the Mac mini comes with a similar adapter.

I think the reasoning behind that is that DVI includes only digital and RGB signals, not composite or S-Video. that conversion is done by the video card, so the adapter likely just connects the right pins to "let the card know" to send out a composite or S-Video signal instead. Thus, it wont work unless the video card knows to do that.

"I start fires!"

The $20 Apple adapter isn't converting DVI to video. As MaxPower2k3 said, the adapter is just signaling the card to output video instead of DVI, and then routing it to the right wires. Pre-G5 cards are not capable of outputting video to the DVI port, so the adapter cannot work.

As for video scan converters, which take a VGA signal and output video, try Focus Enhancements' iTView.

Of course, if your computer is a PowerBook, iBook, or recent iMac or eMac, you already have video output, and if you have a Power Mac G3 or G4, you could just upgrade the graphics card to a modern one that has video output. That would cost you about the same as the iTView, but would get you a graphics card upgrade in the process.

Thank goodness the Mini Mac has the option for composit video out. Makes a perfect media station.
