hi everyone. i'm in a pickle here. i bought a G4 CPU upgrade from Other World Computing last year and after a few months it started randomly rebooting and finally wouldn't start at all. I determined the CPU was fried as the mac was fine when i put the old CPU back in. I sent it back to OWC because it was still under warranty. However they are now refusing to honor the warranty, claiming first I didn't have the original packaging, and later that the heat was un-attached when they received it. The fact remains the CPU is faulty and they do not want to replace it so they are making excuses.

This could have happened to any of us Mac users out there and it's just not right. So here's where I need everyone's help. I want everyone to send a quick email to Benjamin Priest, at benpriest@macsales.com. Tell him you read about how they are refusing to honor the warranty on a faulty CPU and how you think that is unfair. Tell him until they honor this warranty, you will not shop at OWC / MacSales. Its just not right when companies treat their loyal customers like this.

Thank you in advance for your help and let's hope this will help the mac community as whole.

jg

ps - please pass this on

wrong forum. transferring to lounge.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Is it really necessary to post this in four different forums?

hello everyone -

i just wanted to thank everyone that helped me out today by sending a note to OWC. they were deluged by emails and relented and will honor my warranty!!!! SO YOU DON"T NEED TO SEND THEM ANY MORE EMAIL (unless you want to tell them they rock)!

I got several emails from the company president who was home sick and he finally straightened out the sitution. Hat's off to Larry Johnson! He is a good person and a good leader.

OWC has redeemed themselves and they have proven they are a good company. I retract any negative feelings I had towards them. I would also like to personally thank them for taking care of me, and doing it in quick manner.

Please give them your business at www.macsales.com

I once had a problem with OWC and a processor upgrade I bought from them(3 years ago). The upgrade absolutely did not work w/ my mac. I called them 2 days after receiving and told them I was sending it back. They then told me they were going to hit me with a 15% or 20% restocking fee.

I blew a gasket... there was no way I was going to pay $80 because something didn't work. THey would not back down, so I told them that they could watch my approx. $400/year in mac crap purchases go to their competitors.

That was the end of the hoopla. I fully expected to see them take their $80 from me, but a few credit card statements later, I saw that they granted me a full refund.

I still buy stuff from them, but I tend to refrain from purchasing higher-priced, internal components from OWC. I just don't want to have to go through that gasket blowing thing again.

I'm glad to see you got your return processed, though I'm not too hip on your call to have random message board users barrage the company with email on your behalf. We've all got our own crap to deal with.

Maybe if you were a regular forums participant....maybe.

I just want to step up and say that I've order a bunch of stuff from OWC like a SuperDrive upgrade for a PowerBook G4, a G3 Zif upgrade for a Power Mac, a Dual G4 upgrade for a Power Mac, and ram. I've never had a problem with their merchandise or support.

the first time i bought from them i had a problem - i had ordered 3 items, all listed on the website as in stock..well it turns out one of the items wasn't so they held the order as it was expected back in within a couple days...no problem as i was not in a big rush....however....in that couple of days one of the other items i ordered had "sold out" and was no longer in stock so they didn't ship it. i asked them why they didn't hold the other 2 items while waiting for the 3rd and was told they don't go pick the order from stock until all the items are in stock....like, how stupid is that???? anyway, because it was a cross-border shipment too there was the issue of customs and shipping as well....when they shipped the first 2 items they listed all 3 on the invoice and i had to pay the taxes for an item i didn't even get. needless to say i was not happy and let them know it in no uncertain terms i wanted them to ship the remaining item with a declared value of $0.00 so i would pay taxes again and they said they couldn't do that and that i would have to deal with local customs/excise and get a refund for what i was double charged....again, i was not impressed and not happy, and i let them know it.

well, the head of the customer service dept sorted it all out for me...i didn't get charged extra...the goods all worked perfectly...and i have bought gain from them a couple of times and they have been excellent.

I have heard basically the same things as has been said in this thread before in quite a few different places. They provide generally good tech support and help in finding the right purchase but the quality of the merchandise can be hit-or-miss. It is reputable in the fact that they will not steer you wrong or try and upsell you on products but they do have a problem with quality control and replacing items they don’t feel like taking back.

For some older products that are hard to find I think they are a good choice for people who want to keep legacy machines running. But I for one have been weary to do business with them unless it was absolutely necessary

I purchased some RAM from them before Christmas and they sent me the wrong type. After a week they called back and told me that a chip would ship the next day and I could just send the wrong one back.

To my surprise the second chip was charged to my credit card (I was never told about this charge) and about 6 days later I received a refund on my credit card.

The experience left a sour taste and for the reasons above I have added them to my list of places that I don’t buy from.

List:
Best Buy
Comp USA
Macsales
Blockbuster
Hollywood Video
