i asked my statistics teacher if i could just use my laptop in class instead of buying an 80 dollar calculator, that i am only going to use one semester. He said sure.

so... what statistics applications are there? the teacher recommended the class buy the T-83

thank you

Any math application you could use for statistics will cost you more than $80 (namely MatLAB, Mathematica, Maple).

1. If you have excel, that's probably better than anything else, short of SPSS or another full-fledged stats app.

2. I know there are some calculators that do better stats than the one that comes with OS X. Check versiontracker.

3. There are lots of java applets on the web that do different statistics.

4. I'd personally prefer to just get the same calculator the rest of the class is going to use, and leave the computer at home.

1, you are right, i just remembered that the teach did mention that i could use exel. hmm

2, VT, but of course! found some already

3, java... hmmm i will look into that next

4, im at the college all day from 8 to 8, i use the laptop all day. (word 2004, has a feature that records audio)

I know this might sound weird, but i scan all my books into the laptop so i dont have to carry around 4 books all day long. =) (saves a lot of money on books too)

I got myself a Ti-89 Titanium.. and its the best thing EVER. I LOVE my calculator. But thats just me.

You could just get Derive 6 which is a math program made by Texas Instruments. Its probably not the best but it can do what the calculator can do...basically the calculator software for your computer.

Only problem is that its for Windows only.

By the way, Derive 6 costs as much as a Ti-83+. So unless you were to ehm.."borrow" Derive 6 it wouldn't be saving you money.

This may be sandblasting a soup cracker, but there's always R, which is free. I imagine you could do pretty much anything with it, if you can figure out how.

thats exactly what I was wondering....has to take so long that it's hardly worth it, although selling em back is a great way to turn yer student loans into cash. oughtta be able to sell em digitally to other people too...

i think i'd only do that if i was putting them onna tablet pc tho. the cool factor on that is more so than on a laptop.

Cool factor is covered by owning a 12 inch ibook instead of those pc laptops.

It does take a while, but its worth it because books are too darn expensive, especially when i have to buy my books and my brother's books. so we take turns scanning books into the laptops.

btw this is the scanner i bought at circuit city,
scanner

it is usb powered too!
