My roommate is frustrated with the world of analog coaxial cable and has resorted to smashing his VCR. He wants to record a show on VHS.

He's got a Zenith Allegro Hi-Fi VCR (from many years ago). It doesn't have a channel display on the front, so it's fairly old.

The wall plugin goes into the "ANT IN" port, and the other plugin goes to the cable TV. Setting it on either Channel 3 or 4 makes not much difference - Channel 4 changes the static a little on the screen, but not much overall.

Any idea as to what could be wrong?

Thanks!

I might be stating the obvious, but try putting a tape in, then press play (if it doesn't automatically start playing), then check channel 3 or 4 for a signal. A VCR won't automatically go into VCR mode just by turning it on.

Good luck!

might be a pre-bluescreen era vcr. that would explain a lot actually.

Check the TV or VCRs setting for channel type. It could be set to "Antenna" instead of "Cable".

Thanks. We did that, and it didn't play. Just stayed static.

What would it explain? My roommate said it's supposed to have a bluescreen, but I don't know myself.

We get cable just fine on the TV through the regular cable input (that's running through the vcr, actually). And I can't see any menu on the VCr - as in nothing shows up on the TV.

Thanks for all the help, keep it coming!

Seems simple but - did you check the mode of the VCR, (TV/VCR)?

Indeed, and it switched between the two okay - TV worked fine, VCR showed static.

i dunno, vcrs are so cheap I would practically offer to buy a new one to get past this.

Hey, there's a thought. Is there a working VCR nearby that you could try to see if it works?

Unfortunately, no VCR that's handy.

His TV is a fairly new, 20" widescreen HDTV-ready, and the cable is also going through a Monster Cable surge protector / signal cleaner.

Still... it should be working.
