well don't know about the value thing but wanted to warn you that the 12" powerbook screens being a lower grade than on the 17" powerbooks.

I have a 12" powerbook I use as its small and travels well, but am very disapointed in the screen on it...its a fantastic computer other than the sucky screen.

In the Apple retail stores I have seen here in NYC and in Chicago they never have the 12" powerbook near the 15 & 17" powerbooks because the screen quality is so noticibly lower...they always stick the 12" powerbooks by the ibooks which also have the lowergrade screen so you don't realize how poor the 12" screen is in comparison to the Powerbook 15 & 17" models.

Just my opinion though.

What's the viewing angle on the 12" iBook / PowerBook screens? I will say that the 17" PowerBook I saw today was very nice - but I also like my 12" iBook. Just wish the viewing angle wer ea little better.

Good point. Maybe I should elaboate... this is for portability. ALSO in the Fall would come a 20 inch display and a dual 1.8 G5. I would just be using the PB on the road. We have an iBook in the house as well, I see that just fine.

How much detail do you need for email, Office, iWork and this forum?

Is this display that bad?

here is a shot I did last year after I just got it comparing it with my old ibook.

The screen colors are just not as nice and the angle of view is bad, note how you get that magenta cast from a side angle.

with the 12" powerbook (at least mine) you really have to look at it dead on at the exact certain angle for everything to look ok. Go slightly off angle and you get that wierd purple haze that I've didn't get with my old 500mhz ibook.

I've ranted about this in the powerbook section as well, it is just a pet peave of mine about the 12" powerbook screen being so sucky. I do apologize to those who like their 12" powerbook screens, I know that some people are very happy with theirs and I guess that Apple uses 2 vendors to supply screens and maybe one company does a better job than the other. I don't know, I just know I really strongly dislike my 12" powerbook screen, enough so that when Apple does improve the 12" powerbook screens to have a more professional screen I will get a new one immediately..hopefully when the g5's come out in the 12" models.

I love Apple computers obviously but when I see a fault I think others should know about it.

EDIT: And maybe it is not a fault, It may be that I just lucked out on having a awesome screen on my original 500 mhz ibook and got a really mediocre low standard one on my powerbook.

I guess I just expected better from Apple on thier Powerbook line which is supposed to be more professional than the ibooks.

so consider an i book over the pbook? Not exactly where I was going with this, but...? I guess I was wondering if something new came out, would my 17pb drop in value while the current 12pb getting cheaper?

now, i'm wondering about even getting the pb over the ib... w/o looking it up, what am i gaining/losing?

well before you do.. go to a Apple store and look at both in person first.

You have an awesome computer now, I used a 17" powerbook for a month, and loved it. What a incredible screen it has! The key is mobility. I loved the 17" but it was just too much to carry around so I went with the 12".

And yes I did mope about the screen, but if you look at it dead on at the perfect angle it is acceptable, I just wanted you to realize that it is not the same quality as what you have on your 17".

But again, I STRONGLY advise getting your hands on one yourself and checking it out before buying.

It is really awesome other than the mediocre screen or I'd not be using it.

Somehow I doubt that the screen quality is worse than that of an iBook. I use my iBook as my main machine and I think it's perfectly acceptable. Perhaps it's noticeably worse than a 17". I wouldn't be surprised one bit. But, unless you plan to do graphics work on the road I don't think it will be a problem at all.

I know my iBook screen is really lowgrade by comparison to the desktop LCDs, but it's still perfectly fine for my own uses.

I love my iBook. A 12" PB would be cool as well, except I didn't even really consider it since it's only a tad faster and has a few extra features that I didn't need for the extra $500 (or however many hundred more it is).
