I guess is should have searched the internet before I went to the Apple store this morning to pick up my copy of iLife 05. It turns out they don't accept student discounts at the store! Im sure this is old news for the most of you but MAN that was the biggest waste of my time EVER. Just needed to vent

Only on hardware.
Edu software, IIRC, has a different SKU#

I don't know how true that is, because I bought Apple Care using my student discount at the store.
What you should try and do is insist, and show them on their computer that you can get a discount for whatever product on Apple's website.

That's strange. Over here the edu discount works everywhere and with anything.

The Apple Store will not take student discounts on Mac OS X or iLife.

The Apple Stores only give edu discounts on hardware. Software, they tell me, has a different SKU # and they don't stock the educational versions. In fact, the iWork box that I received yesterday has an "Academic Single License" sticker on it. I know for a fact that applications like Photoshop have separate edu versions.

Correct, cadaver. One of the reasons this is done is because it helps Apple track sales by market, which gives them a better idea of where to spend their promotional and advertising dollars.

That makes sense I guess. But I don't see why they shouldn't keep stock of the educational versions at the store. They would still know that a student is buying it.

We always buy through the Apple.com education store. My wife is a teacher. We just bought iWork '05 and iLife '05 with the discount.
I bought the Mac Mini with a discount through the education store at apple.com too.

Yes this has always been the case at the U.S Apple Stores. Apparently it's different elsewhere?

There is a U of M in my state, and I'm not sure if it or the University of Michigan is more popular as far as the whole U.S. is concerned, but you're not talking about either, are you?

FWIW, U of Michigan is more popular than U of Minnesota.

Otherwise known as "Michigan" where I am from. The heart of Michigan incase you didn't know.
I live about 45 miles north of Ann Arbor where "U of M" (Go blue!) and about 25 miles East of East lansing where Michigan State University, otherwise know as MSU (Go Spartans!), is located.
MSU is sometimes referred to by MSU students as " The University of Michigan".
It's a fierce rivalry between the two. I tend to lean in the MSU camp a bit more since I live closer and have known more friends to have attended MSU.

I work in Bay City, just East of Midland.
And if you've ever been to Bay City you have to respect what Madonna said about it: "What a smelly little town".

That's what I thought. I just know that the U of MN is pretty big so I wasn't sure. But I think U of MI is more known for sports, right? And that would make them more popular. My brother is a U of MI fan. Wolverines? Is that right?

Wolverines is correct. U of MI is also pretty large; 40K + students, IIRC.

So Michigan State University is also known as U of M? Or just University of Michigan? I'm confused. U of MI has about 40K and MSU has about 45K. U of MN is a bit bigger with 50K.
At any rate, we just call it "The U" here, since there's no confusing it locally.

I've gotten some free software from the U of MN here. The guy in charge of technology for the college I'm enrolled in does a yearly thing where he uses our tech fees to buy stuff to give to students for free. Last year we each got one free wireless card and a free copy of MS Office (X or XP, your choice) and this year we got a free 256 MB flash drive and a newer version of Office (2004 for OS X or 2003 for XP).
I'm not sure about other software that the school sells, but I think they have a number of free or low-cost software offerings. I know they also give everyone a single free download of Symantec AntiVirus, which is of course really useful if you use a Mac .

No, Michigan State is known as MSU. He meant that MSU fans like to call it " the university of Michigan" (as in "the only one that matters") to make fun of Michigan.
I take it you don't like sports. I'm a little amazed you know so little about other Big Ten schools. Stop worrying so much about your education and focus on what's important: football!
I'm only half joking. You can do both.

Oh geez, Big Ten... a term I've heard of and I know it has to do with 10 schools that are involved in sports together. U of MN is one of 'em. That's it. You're right, I'm not a sports fan. It's fun every now and then (when going with people who are into that kinda thing), but I don't care enough to follow anything as a fan.
There are plenty of other things to hinder my education without sports. Trust me.

U of MI is also a very important research and trauma education hospital. If anyone has a rare illness or serious injury they ship em to U of MI for treatment.

Same with the U of MN. Actually that's one of the things we're best known for, with Mayo Clinic and all. I think King Hussein of Jordan was sent here for treatment in his final days.
I don't follow sports either. I don't think the Gophers are really that great, though. But what the hell, I wish them well. Still, I get funny looks when the buses are really super crowded on a game night and I ask someone what's going on. "Uh, dude, you don't know? There's a football game against ______ tonight!"

The schools are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, and Wisconsin. Yes, that's 11 schools. Apparently, math isn't big up north.
Sports are great -- especially football!

You can use the educational discount at the retail store. That's if you use a staff member to make an online purchase at apple.com

I've been a faculty member of various academic institutions for so long, I don't know what I'd do if I had to start paying retail for software & hardware again

To get back on track from SuperC's post:
The whole point of this thread was about getting edu discounts at the Apple store retail, and last time I checked there were no physical Apple stores in Canada - so the point is of that post is sorta moot. U of M, whatever... there isn't even an Apple store near you.
An Apple store can't give you the price for an item with an SKU different than the item you walk out of the store with - because wouldn't that foil their inventory plans?
