When you go through the Apple Store through an educational institution, how do you prove that you're a student?
I can got through and load up my cart- but when you go to pay- what do they ask for verification?

Last I remember: honor system.
A few years ago I bought a few things using an edu discount and it didn't check for anything (student ID or something of the sort). Maybe it checks to see if you're at least in the same city as the school you're saying you attend.

I believe they do random checks, or ask for verification if you buy a lot of stuff. They'd ask for you to fax them some ID or provide and institution email address.

They don't normally check for the small stuff. I distinctly remember getting checked when I bought FCP 2.0 ($250 - a 75% discount at the time!) My guess is that they don't bother checking except when the price or the discount is really big.

never had them check. The terms also limit your hardware purchases at edu discount within a set period of time. That's kind of a check and balance.

I know the last few times I've gone and done edu purchases for everything except for Office 2004 Student Teacher they asked for ID. If you order from the online Apple store they don't ask for ID.

No, not in high school. Just old and planning on trying something new.
Thanks for the info!

Ouch. Yeah; you'll probably get checked, then.
Assuming you've been accepted as a student at the school already, then you should be eligible for the discount. If you end up needing some kind of document proving your enrollment, then your school's registrar should be able to help you.

Take a copy of your acceptance letter, student ID, etc. and any other official correspondence from the school.

If you're talking about going off to university and you've got an acceptance letter - that's all they need for proof (bought my PB using mine...)
|

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

I would imagine that they can get student names from the schools you say you are in as well. After all the school is registered with apple to allow the discount for students. I know with the federal employee store you E.S. an acceptance form and your social can be run from credit to prove if you are employed with the government. I think it would be this way but I really don't know if they even check. You could Find yourself in a lot of trouble if they did check and found it to be fraudulent.

Apple isn't allowed to just call up a school and ask if someone is enrolled there. The Privacy Act of 1974 (unless the name has changed) won't allow it. If the school did turn the names over they could get a hefty fine.

My wife is a teacher... so I usually get her to get ma stuff...
Online, she just goes to the edu section, and pick the school she teaches at. No actual proof. The only thing I bought at the store was the ipod... she had her ID, but they never asked for it.
Although my friend always gets asked for his school ID when he claims a student discount.

I've never been asked to verify my status as a student online either, but then again I usually don't buy big ticket items from Apple Online either. I think asking for verification could make it a time consuming hassle. Though Apple would be in their full rights to ask for proof, and I could provide it, if it works for Apple the way it is now, it works fine for me too.
No problems with ordering iWork.-- Though I didn't get free shipping with the discount!.. And, of course, Apple inexplicably continues to add sales tax, regardless of what state one is in....

I see But what if there is something in small print stating that they can check if you agree to the terms of purchasing the student discount? I don't know if there is I am just curious. They would be able to correct?
