Do you have the title or any of the lyrics? One of us may be able to help identifying it.

It could be "Broken." That song is by Seether but the lead singer of Evanescence does lead vocals for it.

No problem! It is a good song. I haven't heard anything Ev's new album yet, but I heard someone was suing Walm-mart for stocking it without the explicit sticker because the F word is in one of the songs.

South African music rules!!!
Shaun Morgan, the lead singer of Seether is dating Amy Lee, the lead singer of Evanescence and they're on the same label which is why they did a song together. Seether come from Jo'burg in South Africa. They used to be called "Saron Gas" but the record company thought it wasn't cool to name the band after a gas that killed people in the Japanese Underground. I saw them in 1999 and it was clear they were going to be big. "Fine Again" is still their best song if you ask me. I do think the new version of Broken is better than the original which is a rare occurrence! The stuff on the album is mostly 6 years old though. Their new album is going to rock!

I've heard some of Seether's stuff before, and they're pretty good. Is Broken a remake? Did Seether do the original version or someone else? I never heard it.

Broken was written by Seether. The original version is on the Disclaimer I album (last track I think). Seether were asked to do a song for the Punisher soundtrack and Shaun proposed redoing Broken with his girlfriend, Amy Lee. That's how it came about. Actually, I spoke to one of the guys in the band a while back and some of them were none too happy that Broken broke ( ) because their record company got them out of the studio and made them tour with Evanescence to promote Disclaimer. They really wanted to work on the new album and were sick of touring and apparently it put quite a bit of strain on the band.

Lol. No, it's spelled with an "i" in Afrikaans too!
I don't know why they spelled it with an "o" - either a mistake or they were trying to get away from the gas. Here's the cover.
EDIT: Google provideth the answer: "The band’s original name, Saron Gas, appeared to be promoting a gas used by terrorists known as Sarin Gas. No, that’s not a spelling error, so yes, they’re spelt completely differently and have completely different connotations. In fact, Saron Gas is actually a sound effect used in sound production!"

Why does every thread about a band turn into a "your taste in music sucks" thread, no matter what band it's about?

The song we're talking about wasn't written or performed by Evanescence. The band that did write and perform it, Seether, have been compared to a lot of the bands on your list. In fact, I hear "Polly" by Nirvana in almost every song on Disclaimer. Given your taste in music, you should give them a listen.
As for Evanescence, not really my cup of tea but they are pretty unique and creative. I wouldn't say that the gothic rock/classical music mix that they're famous for is poppy or done. Who else has mixed those elements? I'm just not sure it's sustainable because the formula they've used is rather predictable - heavy guitars, cut guitars leaving electronic beat, add back guitars slowly, add lots of strings and sing anthemic chorus. Half way through the album, I find myself wanting more variety. Still, I skip Evansecence songs in my iTunes library a lot less than some of the other albums I bought last year.

If you think evanescene is creative or a original you need to seriously broaden your horizons. They are nothing more than bubble gum goth, a watered down commercial version of Lacuna Coil who have been around for a while. Seriously check out, youhavebadtasteinmusic.com , there is no way to justify or rationalize bad taste in music. It is like someone going off on rant of the virtues of a quarter pound with cheese from McDonalds, it is just silly

You know, I hardly throw stones out on here but I just need to rant for a moment.
I am tired of the mentality that if something is popular, it must suck, is no good and or not deserving of what it becomes. Evanescence is different, maybe not as original as most are lead to be believed, but obviously who did it first wasn't as capable as having mass appeal. It would be like Apple making the iPod, but not marketing it. God forbid it becomes more than a cult following by us Apple loyalists. Should we discount the iPod because it’s become so popular? No! Because you didn't discover this band or that band or because they become successful with what they have created even if someone has done it before…DOES NOT MEAN IT SUCKS. Music is subjective and will always be, so stop with the hate and quit wasting your breath. Accept it for what it is. Someone expressing and being themselves to the best of their abilities, why should they be faulted for it becoming popular?
Seriously, get over yourselves.
</end rant>

Is it the one with the distorted guitar part that's one power chord, and it goes:
Da-dun, da-dun, da-dun, da-da-da-da-da-dun?
Oh, wait, that's all of them.

Seriously, though, they could be a totally obscure underground band from Lawrence Kansas and it wouldn't change the fat that they've basically recorded the same song 37 times.

I agree it is a bit repetitive (though I'v heard worse). And I have no qualms with said argument...because you had a reason behind what you say. I was speaking to the endless amounts of "they suck," period comments. You make a valid point, and those are facts that are hard to argue with.

It is not about music being popular, plenty of musicians are very popular: led zeppelin, tool, Johnny Cash.... it is about accountants creating music, plugging it into the distribution channels that they control, and people buying into the hype. Granted, Seether Nickelback and Evanescence are 13 - year old music, if you are 12 or 13 I apologize , I am being harsh.

I'm not 13 and took no offense to that comment nor do I feel a 13 yeard old would. I just think it's a bit much to think Evanescence was targeted to a 13 year old audience. Evanescence is what it is. They just write songs and make their music. "Bring Me To Life" was on alt and rock radio stations long before it got heavy air play on "pop" stations. At least, that was my experience anyway. Trust me, I'll be honest and say I do like pop music, but I love just as much or more those bands that not everyone knows about. Evanescence just doesn't strike me as subconsciously aiming to be pop music. Just my thoughts.

bubble gum goth? That's a new one for me. Evanescence is unlike most of the music on today's radio which is either pop/dance or whiny rock like Coldplay. The band's not perfect -- I echo Troll's sentiments.
It's fine and dandy if some other band has made similar music before. There are only so many chords on a guitar. I don't remember anyone saying that Evanescence was a brand new sound, and they're still better than a lot of the crap on radio today.
But hey, feel free to go to somebody's blog and write about how much better you are and smarter you are than other people.
