A few minutes ago, some gangsters broke my driver side window. They were going for the car stereo, but the car alarm scared them off. Now, after cleaning out the glass, I am left with this window-less car and need to put another one.

I have searched the internet and I can't find window replacements, only window replacement services, at high prices. Tomorrow I will search in the Discount Auto Parts, Napa and Pepboys. If the price is not right, I will go to the junkyard.

Where should I search for a replacement window?

BTW, my auto insurance won't cover this.

I bought mine from a "pull a part" type place. Cost me about $40 and then a car repair shop charged me about $30 to put it in. Total price, about $70, not too bad. My stereo though was swiped, that sucks!

Man, that sucks. I used to drive an old Jaguar, had it broken into four times. The biggest problem was to find replacement glass. In the end I just wanted to leave it open with a big sign saying "There's nothing worth stealing in this car."

I had many a happy fantasy involving petty thieves and baseball bats.

I had the rear corner window broken out of my car... I went to a pull your own place... pulled one out of the same style car... and installed it myself... it was pretty easy, the door panel is a bitch to get off, but if you are somewhat mechanically adept, it should be pretty simple... you could always pull a used one and have a shop do it... I would say one to two hours MAX for labor.

Ya my Window was smashed out a few days ago. Just found out last night about it. My driver side lock was wasted 6 months ago and after that I left the car unlocked for a long time. A month ago I locked it out of habbit and the passenger side lock was wasted. Of course that locked me out of my car and since im not driving it I didnt care. Now I wish I left it unlocked. Its going to take hours to clean out all the safty glass. I hate vandals. In the case of my Window its covered but the deductable is higher then the Window so in my case no point cuz I wont see any money for it and will have a claim.

Jeff ******* says (9:19 AM): Eww, Ottawa is gross. It's infested with politicians, and presently, 1 Harper as well.

I have bought exactly the same car (color and year of manufacture) for 500 euro's. The only difference is that it has no engine. So I have an abundancy of spare parts for the next 5 years.

Replacement glass is more easily had at an auto recycling center, aka a "junk yard". Try to learn what other cars or years are compatible with yours and you'll have an easier time getting the glass. Regular auto places don't sell glass.

You can also call an auto windshield shop and get a phone quote. Tell them you have no insurance. Tell them you'll remove the door panel, etc. in advance so they only have to remove the old glass at the window mechanism and attach the new glass. They might give you a break. It could be around $200.

I'm assuming you don't have comprehensive coverage. You don't need collision for this. You also didn't say what car.

Otherwise, you'll be looking out a plastic and duct tape window for awhile...

Ahem. Oops. My car car is a 1994 Mazda 626. It is a pretty common car in this area so I think that the junkyard should have it.

You saved me a trip to the automotive stores, thanks I will look for windshield shops in the yellow pages.

However, I'd like to learn what other cars have compatible windows... hmmm.

I got my door glass in the junkyard for $25 and I installed it myself. The savings could easily pay for an iPod shuffle 1 GB, if I was interested in that. Though the whole activity took me one afternoon and one morning.

I hope the next car service is as easy as this.
