"For example, an experiment that would raise concerns, he said, is genetically engineering mice to produce human sperm and eggs, then doing in vitro fertilization to produce a child whose parents are a pair of mice."

Ugh. I read this this morning, and haven't quite made up my mind about it...

A mate of mine made a good comment on it, though:
Now that is frightening, imagine them testing on mice and one day one of them turning around and saying 'Dah dee!'
Not gonna happen, but I thought it was funny nonetheless.
Just who are Britain? What do they? Who is them? And why?

"Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!" Perhaps soon this insult will have a stronger meaning!

Triple quoted for even more emphasis. There was a thread here awhile back that actually had some pictures of of them. Quite disturbing.

there are less sensational uses of chimeras that justify continued research. while lending themselves less to lines from monty python, they also offer hope that some day human tissues could be harvested for use in transplant or therapy.

if animals are used to grow human tissue, then humans might as well be used to grow animal tissue. while the latter seems unethical now, it would be morally equivalent to the former after the line between humans and animals becomes blurred.

I'm not arguing against it, just offering some food for thought.

That necessitates an automatic assumption that animals are on an equal plane with humans in a sense of general ethics and morality.

A lot of people don't agree with that. I'm one of them.

I was going to argue that two rats would have the same ethical status as a human if they mated and produced an human child, but the whole scenario was so ridiculous and laughable that I gave up.
