Ok because I am getting sick of a endless argument with a friend I decided to post this poll to see what others would do.

One of my best friends gave me his brothers car a little while back, and bought him a Newer used car for his birthday. So anyways Its a 1987 Honda Prelude.

Now the only problem the car currently has which is keeping me from driving it is a fail in Vancouvers Autoemission test, Air Care. Ive tracked the problem down to a O2 Sensor, about $100.00. The engine runs great, his brother replaced the clutch just before I got it so thats new. The timing belt was replaced too. The power Windows, Power Stering, Power sun roof, power assisted breaks and power mirrors all work. The heater works the breaks are decent, prob need to service them in a few months and the tread on the wheels are about 50%.

The car could use a wheel alignment and tuneup but dosent need it. I have a leaking fuel pipe running to the gas tank but thats a free warranty repair I have been told. I spent 400 fixing the exhust which was rusted out bad again air care related crap. Recently the locks got punched in and the driver side window has been smashed and cuz the car was sitting so long the battery is dead but the alternator runs fun since LOL we drove it with out a battery after we jumped it. So anyways My friend thinks I should throw the car away and get another car because I have to fix the window, locks aand O2 sensor. Since I got the car for free and only spent 400 on stuff that was related to aircare and not the actually running of the car and the major things on old cars have been replaced like the clutch I just want to spend money on getting it tip top and keep it (fun car to drive) but he thinks im wasting my money. The value of these cars are between 1500 to 3000 CDN so even if I spent another 1100 i will have spent about the same amount as if I just bought it used with no work done. So what would you guys do, keep it, haul it away or just spend the min on it and drive it into the ground. I really like this car and if I did get ride of it I would get a 88 Prelude anyways which are running around 5000 used. But I dont think I need to replace this car. Oh it might have a minor electrical problem but thats common in Hondas from the 80's and early 90's. battery dosent charge as fast as it should.

If you like the car and want to save money then fix it and drive it into the ground.

Rarely is there a cheaper car than the one you are currently driving. And if you like the car, all the better!

And by all means post comments about the troubles of used cars. cuz I cant convince him that I could be in more trouble with another used car that might be newer. At least this engine is in great shape for how old the car is. LOL so far going up a steep grade hill with 4 big guys in it the car was able to maintain 130KPH in 4th, and I can get her 80KPH in second gear high rev and well over 100 in 3rd... its a 5 speed.

My main point im trying to come across to him is that it cost me 0.00, even if I have to do 1500.00 worth of work the car will prob be in way better shape then any used car for 3-5000 that will prob still need work anyways. Ive had the car long enough and drove in it many times with my friends brother to know there is nothing really wrong with it anyways. Would be nice to have a 88 with 4WS but oh well.

Do you have the money for another car or would you have to finance another one? If you don't already have the money you would be better off just keeping what you have. At least with this one you know what problems it has. Used cars can cost you a fortune because you never know what you are getting yourself into. Also, if you finance a car the cost of insurance will be more since the coverage that you carry will be higher.

I can't afford a new car, I might be able to get financing but I would need a good down payment since my credit is shot to hell. So basically either spend a few hundred now or save up a few thousand and not have anything for a few months. Also my current car is about the same price to insure as a new car since its a high theift car and a sports car and I carry no discounts right now cuz I only got a licence 2 years ago.

I voted to keep it. You could put around $500 into it and not worry about car payments and the higher insurance you would need because you have a car loan. the oxygen sensor and window are probably the most expensive things you need to replace. You can do a tune up yourself. Plugs, cap, rotor, change the oil and new air filter is about all you'd need to do on that car (unless it's not fuel injected).

It looks pretty good, shame about the big dent though. If it hasn't got too much miles I'd say fix it. The amount necessary to fix it isn't that high. And even if you buy an other second hand that doesn't need work you don't know what costs can come up with that one it can turn out even more expensive.

Verdict: fix that ride.

I did, 1500.00 the low side value of the car. If I dont excede 1500 in total cost of things then I really come out ahead as the car cost me nothing orginally.

The Alarm package I want is only 15.00 more to get it with a remote starter, for 15.00 more why not. Besides it could help out if I ever go to Edmonton again in the winter. From the hotel room start the car and let the engine warm up for 10 min before I get inside. I want the keyless Entery because I never plan to have door locks again.

Why would you spend the money on an alarm any way? Are you keeping things IN the car that are of value? An alarm ill not help with that... By the time it goes off your stuff is gone (including the mp3 player) And have you ever seen anyone do ANYTHING about a car's alarm going off?

Or are you worried about the car being stolen? If so there are other solutions.

As for the car, for the $500 ($620) CDN I would keep the sucker for as long as you need it. The big questions I have would be when was the timing belt replaced? Should be every 80-100K I think in that engine. Also, how many miles on the engine?

Honda is a good car, certainly worth fixing.

they must be, i dont know the history of the orginal owner but second owner said they didnt take care of the car, they just drove it. Second owner, the friend I got it from drove the car really dam hard. And its still in one peace and running good. And taking its age in consideration I have no doubts about Hondas being good cars.
