I think the Napster subscription service definitely has its benefits. Here's what got me thinking: Apple has a section on the iTMS called 'iTunes Essentials'. I was browsing through this the other day, and thought how nice it would be to get to know a new genre well, for instance, jazz. Now there are about 90 tunes altogether in the iTMS Jazz Essentials, and I'll be ****ed if I'm going to spend £60-ish just to get to know new music that I may or may not be too keen on! The Napster system, OTOH, would allow me to download all of these (and of course unlimited other tracks) and listen to them at some point over the next month for about £10, and then I could choose to permanently buy the tracks I liked. Can anybody point out a flaw in this plan? Or is anybody mature enough to acknowledge that, while Apple is great and all that, there are sometimes circumstances where other companies have good ideas too? I'm not saying I'd like to get all my music this way; I just think it would be nice to have this option on the iTMS.

[btw, I thought this warranted another thread on the subject as no one else has actually considered the merits of the Napter system - all discussion so far has been negative]

Just because you don't get an answer as fast as you'd like doesn't warrant to start a thread about the SAME issue again.

Unless I'm missing something, that isn't the Napster plan. You can't permanently keep the tracks unless you're willing to permanently pay the monthly fee. That's a deal-breaker unless you consider music disposable. I don't.

You can't go wrong with Ella Fitzgerald. People who don't like Ella probably aren't people at all.

lol, well thanks for the tip! But re. the payment plan - I'm saying it would be great to be able to try stuff out without getting bitten. I could rent it all, just for a month, and then BUY the stuff I really liked, iTunes style. Napster does allow you to do that don't they? You can still buy tunes as well as rent them?? I think it would be good if Apple offered you the option of either method - subscription or $.99 a song. A kind of try-before-you-buy scheme.

The problem with Napster is they charge you $1 per song when you burn to CD. If you want to listen to your music outside of your portable player you end up paying more than iTunes.
