So I have another reason to hate microsoft now. Hotmail now requires one of those things where you enter in letters to prove you're not a machine. As such, Mail no longer works with hotmail. So I'm ready to break my last tie with microsoft and find a new email account. Are there any good free email services that allow you to access your mail through a mail application?

gmail is pretty good. technically it's by invitation only, but they've started giving them out 50 at a time so it shouldn't be too hard to find one (see one of the many threads on gmail invitations on these boards)

1. GMail. It's my main e-mail address, now, and I love it.

2. Fastmail. I used them before GMail, and was extremely happy with them. IMAP and POP access. Full webmail access. Tons of features. Very easy to use. Great support.

Would you consider using Entourage instead of Apple's Mail? I use it, and I check my hotmail, gmail, and pop accounts all at the same time.

Gmail is wicked awesome. After I configured POP, I started reading all my Gmail mail with Thunderbird.

I also have 50 invites left, which is a waste since I gave all my friends Gmail already.

I'm also a gmail fan. Only problem with the POP access is that my web account is a mess now, because I hardly ever log into it that way. IMAP please.

Why not just set the option to archive after POPping?

What I don't like is that sent messages seem to get drawn down too so you end up with doubles if you are posting to a yahoo group list.

Otherwise, I'd really like IMAP as well...

gmail is mine main client as well (thanks to a fellow macnner for the original invite).

But there are some issues... every tried to print 1 message from a thread? Can't be done... I don't think.

I probably should do that. The problem is that I don't want to archive any spam. I guess in the worst case if my 1GB Gmail gets filled up I can switch to my 2GB, or whatever it is, Yahoo Mail. My girlfriend prefers Yahoo for some reason.

if you have a static IP address and don't mind leaving your mac on 24/7, just register a domain name for 12.00 a year and run your own email server
