It's a real gamble. And it's merits versues disadvangtages have been argued up one side and down the other side. But at this point, with Apple making so many software products, does it not make some kind of sense to license the Mac OS to Intel based hardware companies. Why can't I go into an Apple store, buy a 3.6Ghz HP that runs Tiger and Apple would make a percentage of the sales?

There we go again...

If Apple lost control of the hardware, they'd lose control of perceived quality. Think of all the problems that would occur if any loser company could sell their cheapo components (i.e. vid card, sound card, MoBo) with their own shoddy drivers.

Jobs: Microsoft still copying; PC makers want OS X February 10 - 13:06 EST__ In a six-page Fortune article (subscription required), Apple CEO Steve Jobs says that Microsoft is still copying the Mac operating system and that three PC makers are wanting to use Mac OS X with their machines. Jobs said Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" will have everything Microsoft wants its Longhorn OS to have. "They copied the original Mac with Windows 95," Jobs said, "and now they're going to be copying us again." The article also notes that "three of the biggest PC makers are wooing Jobs to let them license OS X and adapt it to computers built around standard Intel chips. Why? They want to offer customers, many of whom are sick of the security problems that go with Windows and tired of waiting for Longhorn, an alternative. And besides, Apple has buzz now, and Microsoft does not."

SO FREAKIN' WHAT ?
People want the DRM-free iPod killaaarr, want a headless gaming Mac with latest GPU for $ 299 and win the lottery on a daily basis.
PIPEDREAMS. It ain't gonna happen.
End of discussion.

1) Jobs wouldn't be talking about this if it was going to happen - they never ever talk about future products (apart from mess ups like the iMac G5, and to put people off waiting like the PowerBook G5)
2) There would be no point in a Mac mini if this were going ahead.
What would be interesting though, as someone mentioned a while ago, is if Apple licensed it's hardware a la the iPod+HP.

i don't think anything like this will happen, in the near future atleast. maybe in a long long time we might see apple do something like ibm and get rid of their hardware and distribute mac os x among all the other hardware dealers. but i doubt it for the next 20 years atleast.

Exactly. Apple makes the whole widget with good reason.
