My web-design teacher (in high school) is a moron. Earlier this year I pointed out to him that the site looks like crap in Safari and Firefox and he just brushed it off as a Mac problem and he never did anything about it. I just figured he was one of those people who think Mac people don't matter because they are such a minority. But its not just a Mac problem, its a standards-compliant-browser problem. I gave up after reminding him three times. He still uses Internet Explorer and wont let you install Firefox on the school computers. (I installed it on a thumb drive so I don't have to endure the pain of IE). By now I am way off topic... So back to the main reason for this thread -->

The site has been changing recently... its getting worse by the day. I feel like just smacking the Sh!t out of this guy. I can't explain how stupid he is. Every time I tell him nicely that the site wont work right in Firefox he makes up some excuse then does nothing to fix it. I decided to try to validate the site yesterday... I got 313 errors on the home page alone.

How can I slap some since into the guy?! Any suggestions? I don't want to be mean or rude, but I almost feel like I have too. Being nice hasn't worked so far.

Heres the site:

I care because the school uses an online grading system. No report cards in the mail, its all online... and damn near unreadable. The grades are updated weekly.

And include this screenshot to prove how awful that site looks, even on Windows.

I mean seriously, you can't make out what the site is about, what it's for, any information on it... it's 100% useless. If this site shows the standard of this guy's education as a web-design teacher, then he deserves not only to be taken off the job of designing and keeping the shool website, but to lose his job as a web-design teacher completely. Complain to the headmaster about him and say he's not doing his job properly. If nothing else, it might get the headmaster to at least talk to him and tell him to get his finger out...

my high school's web design teacher doesn't know the first thing about web design. she teaches straight out of the frontpage book. web design class was more of an excuse to play unreal tournament for an hour and a half a day.

Yeah, it's every bit as screwed in Explorer as in Safari. The whoe site's just blown to bits. I think it's missing all the positioning attributes in the .css file. He's trying to build a pure CSS web page, which is admirable, but he's failed UTTERLY!

taking web design in high school most of the time is a joke. Most school systems think that web design consists of telling the kids to do exercises from a poorly written black and white Frontpage book.

Did HTML in school. Submitted two pages for each assignment- the actual assignment, and a duplicate that conformed to the standards and wasn't broken. I remember teaching a design teacher how to use a CAD program (miniCAD? I forget), despite the fact that I had never seen a CAD program in my life, I was able to because it was barely like Photoshop 3.0 with a Z axis.

There are horror stories. I was told one, where the writer of C or C++ tutorials (ISTR, I don't know C yet) didn't understand the need for the ";" character to escape something or other, so the code was a mess and included notes that "This will not compile due to inherant limitations in this language.". Messages have been sent to my school to remove the note "This website redesigned by student _____" as later changes by the admin made it an embarassment. The panoramas used on the site are hilarious atleast, rooms look like funhouses.

I was installing some software on one of the web designers machines here the other day (University), and the scary thing was she was using Frontpage...

Our site still looks nice though, but a few months ago I was talking with one of the designers about Firefox, and he didn't even know it existed.

It's closest to readable on Mozilla, maybe that will allow you to check those lunch schedules.
And if you think it looks bad on Safari, try it on Opera.

Its pretty ugly and it just looks thrown together.

Holy mother of jesus, that's a crappy site! Aside from it looking like doggy poo, what's with your teacher's Javascript fetish? And I thought my school's website was bad!

You could always completely re-do the website, and show him how much cleaner the code is and how it looks good across all platforms. I was going to do that for one of my teacher's websites—in fact, I did re-do it, graphics, code, and all—but then I decided not to, because I hated her too much to bother helping her. This is the same teacher that wouldn't let me download my PowerPoint presentation that I had uploaded to my site's server, because she said it would definitely give her a virus, while she gladly took students' floppies and loaded their presentations. Oh boy, was I livid after that.

That's terrible.

Our school website is designed and run by the administration system the school uses. All our timetables, email, class lists, roll marking, paging system, etc are controlled through this. It's not a bad site but its hell in Firefox. http://www.sjcmda.vic.edu.au/ It used to be a lot better looking but oh well. Our school does sorta have the 6th best computer system in Australia, though, so we sorta have an advantage. And only one of our web design teachers is a fool.

If it weren't such a sad state of affairs, that pathetic site would be one terrific laugh. This guy actually thinks he's a web designer? Perhaps he's blind. Poor guy - you, not your mentally challenged teacher. But the incredible thing is, MacMan, once you're done with high school you'll probably look back quite fondly on that stage of your life. Don't get me wrong, life will improve for most after high school, but it also gets substantially more complicated. Just do enough to get good grades and for the rest of the time do your best to have (responsible) fun with your friends. And definitely don't pass up your prom.

Hmmm... Agreed.

On Windows I use Firefox: That site is completely unusable in Firefox.

I tried IE: At least it works I suppose, but it's ugly with some formatting issues.

I guess it doesn't take much to "teach" web design these days.

Ouch that site is BAD. The side bar shows up on the wrong side. and everything else is on the bottom. UGH looks like an amature designed the site. If he is teaching you web design you would be better off learning from a book.

The site certainly looks terrible on Safari. Isn't there another teacher that you could find that might be in agreement. It would seem that someone in responsibility would want to present the school in a better light.

Oh trust me Im not learning jack from him. I did Web design last year, with a teacher who knew what he was doing. But he retired and now this moron is teaching web design AND advanced web design BOTH IN THE SAME CLASS PERIOD! There is only 6 people (including me) in advanced web design, so we get to use the school's laptops and sit in the classroom off to the side of the computer lab while he teaches the [non-advanced] web design class. The class description sounds good:

Originally written in class description for advanced web design:
Topics to be covered currently in this course include PHP, NET, ASP Java, Flash,
Swish and Linux/Open Source. As technology evolves, the content of this course
will also evolve in an attempt to stay reasonably abreast of leading edge concepts.
But he hasn't taught us anything yet. He comes over to the advanced web design people and asks how we are doing on our project every day, then he never says anything to use after that. I don't even know PHP! (Which is why I use that class to read online tutorials about PHP... and play games... and sneak off to the cafeteria and eat... etc.)

The "project" I am talking about is pretty stupid too. This is a semester class (half year) and at the beginning of the class he told us that we would work as a team on one main project that will last the entire semester. That project turned out to be doing his work for him. We have to make a new section of the site for "campus ministry". A grand total of 5 pages... that will last the entire half of a year We could be done in a week if we wanted too...

The class is a joke.
