I have no far-off relatives to wave at down a video conferencing connection. Threats of divorce stopped me playing online games a few years ago. Sure, I enjoy streaming clips of the news but I can also just turn my head slightly and watch it on my TV. There used to be some joy for me feeling secure downloading hefty Microsoft security patches, but now I've given up on Windows and got a Mac instead.

I can totally sympathize with the writer of this article. All day I'm in front of a computer at work where I pretty much surf all day long (in between doing more important, meaningful tasks, of course!) and then I go home and while I'm not in front of the computer much, I find an hour or two slipping away before I know it. I've been debating about dropping my broadband (and keeping the $60 a month) and not having ANY internet connection at all, as I'd probably be in front of the computer more with a dial up connection.
I've been on broadband for more than 5 years and I can say, other than tons of illegal downloads, I haven't gotten anything useful out of it.

That's hard to believe, screamingFit. You think you would be on the Internet for longer periods with a dial-up connection? If you mean you'd be waiting for an eternity for pages to load, then I understand what you're saying. But the Internet on dial-up in this age is miserable. Totally miserable. It once was bearable. However, if I did not have broadband, I would still need a 'net connection of some form. The Internet has become indispensable to me. It has changed the way I work, play and live in general. As long as my basic needs are met, the next highest priority is the Internet.

I don't think that double-dipping of moderation would count as such
