Although I'm an only child, I have a rather huge extended family. My mom has 14 brothers and sisters, so the tradition in my family is that we always give small gifts, usually just cards. Otherwise, you'd go bankrupt trying to buy for everyone.

Today's my uncle Alan's birthday, so I got him a card and threw some scratch- off lottery tickets in it. He scratched the first one, won $50. Not bad. Second one, won $7, meh, not great, but better than a hard kick in the face. Third one hits for $25000. Definitely better than a hard kick in the face. Not bad for only spending $9. I think I just got promoted to favorite nephew

I'm surprised he actually won on three separate tickets. Are you just lucky or does your state have scratch tickets with really good odds (like 1 in 3)? I could buy two dozen scratch tickets and I'd be lucky if I won $2 out of the entire bunch.

I'm not sure, but it's been a pretty good week for hitting. Tuesday, I bought one for myself on my way to work (a $10 ticket) and won $500, which I thought was doing a stroke of business. On that same kind of ticket, I won a grand on News Year's Eve, which seemed a damn fine way to start the new year. Maybe I'm just really good luck .

He recently retired, so he's going to use some of the cash to go to Australia for a month, a life long dream of his. Glad I could help make that a reality, even if it was pure dumb luck.

They were three different kinds of tickets in the card, and I was pleasantly surprised they all won, especially the big one

Not to poison the water or anything, but was he grateful enough to slip about a grand of his winnings back to you?

Your mom was one of fifteen(!) And you're an only child. No fool, that lady.
Congrats on the good-luck gift; even better that he'll get to have a really unique experience because of it.

Actually, he offered to split it 50/50. I declined, but told him if he felt the need to share the wealth, he could pick me up an iPod Shuffle

Yeah, I definitely need a new machine, but I can easily afford it. The only reason I didn't get one sooner was I didn't really need it. Now that my iBook is getting a little long in the tooth, albeit sooner than I expected, I'll pick myself up a new desktop machine. Cash isn't an issue for me, so I'll leave his winnings to him. A shuffle is something I probably wouldn't have bought for myself, so it's a good way for him to give me a little something back. It's win/win

A few for me too, please. I think you must have much better odds on your lottery tickets than we do here... my dad used to play every week for about a year, and he only won anything twice - both times less than $10.

But to you and your uncle

Dude you'd be an idiot not to push for at least $5k of that.

Morals aside, you deserve a lot of that cash.

Dude, you have got your head screwed on right.
Don't listen to these whiners saying you should get a chunk of change.
You have given generously for no other reason than to simply give.

Props to you . . . and get that G5 already!

I would have asked at least for an iPod mini.
