When I get new hardware in the mail, you're confronted with all sorts of packaging that you want to through away. For the sake of being able to return things and get warranty repairs, what do you do? Break down the boxes and store them? Cut out the UPC symbols and toss the rest?

I open this discussion because I just bought a Maxtor OneTouch II drive and a Linksys Network Storage Link that I want to return. But all I have are the receipts and the UPC symbols cut from the boxes --- I tossed the rest. Was this a bad idea?

I usually just keep all of the packaging and just store it somewhere. It's better if I need to return it or sell it later.

Depends on where I live. If I have lots of storage I tend to keep the boxes for future returns or sales, if not I just throw them out.

I keep it all as when you resell it with the packaging it seems to go for much more.

I keep the packaging in my basement for a year or so, or until I sell the item. Thanks for reminding me; I need to throw out some boxes down there.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Well, it's starting to dawn on me that if I want to return something, I probably need the original packaging. Which means I threw it out prematurely, and having kept the UPC symbols may not be enough. Drat!
