I wasn't intending to watch, but when I turned it on, I left it. I have to say those are some of the better performances I 've seen on the show in years...

On a tangent, anyone watching in HD notice that the apple ads were also in HD?

I'm still trying to figure out how a band can win best new artist for an album released three years ago...

Oh...is that what I watched? I thought it was a pay-tribute-to-Ray Charles memorial show.

(while meaning no disrespect to the genius of Ray Charles, it's a shame that an artist has to die in order to receive the recognition he should have received in life)

Other observations...the whole Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute was painful to watch and listen to.

Melissa Etheridge's (minus Joss Stone) tribute to Janis Joplin was powerful.

And the best performance of the night goes to Green Day.

Wow!

That is great, that means they are really really into this "Year of HD" thing.

I KNOW!

they had that hit single a LOOOOOONG time ago and then they had a few more after a LONG ASS layoff for some reason.

i think ray charles had a good album. i own it. but i think they could have gave it to someone else. greenday created something very nice and very different. alicia keys is talented up the wazoo. i would preferred it if they got it. even kanye presents a sea-change for the standard rap artist.

performances i really liked:
Alicia Keys - I liked her but after tonight... I LOVER HER. Hot as hell and she sings like a rock artist with a piano
Greenday - natcht
Franz Ferdinand - I liked but I am still not convinced to buy album. they sound exactly like peter gabriel.
Bonnie Raitt - i always dug her alot
Los Lonely Boys - great but i dont know too much about them

so i wish the Killers did domething but very nice

Meh. Ironically enough, two artists who guest-starred on The College Dropout released better albums this year (Mos Def and Talib Kweli).

Franz Ferdinand - I liked but I am still not convinced to buy album. they sound exactly like peter gabriel.

THE Peter Gabriel? The one who fronted Genesis? "Sledgehammer"? "In Your Eyes"? Wow. I'm not hearing that at all.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person who can't stand the Killers. They don't do anything for me at all.

i listened to a co-workers talib and mosdef... i mean, there were several hits on KW that i liked and i like the weird way he raps. i also like the way he thinks. i feel as though if i was black that i would understand mos and talib better but as it is i like KW's rags to riches CD.

that one song from the moment i heard it screams PG to me. i haven't heard a second song from them yet.

The Killers - I love the emotion and clarity of them. I could care less if they were famous or not. When i bought the CD, i had no idea they had a fan base. I bought it because of a music thread here at macnn.

The broadcast itself was amazingly done. CBS again showed why they are the leaders in HD broadcasting.

I can't wait for The Masters in April.

From what I saw, it was
A) Painful
B) Dreadful
C)MInd numbing until they sang that horrifying "lets get some cash for the tsunami victims song", at which point it became vomitously atrocious.
D) all of the above.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

I forgot to answer this. You're a little confused -- the two similar awards are Best Record and Best Song. The former is given to the performer while the latter is given to the songwriter.

I was only trying to give credit where credit due. I like all kinds of music and genuinely enjoyed every performance. Kanye- Green Day- Ray- now wait- you can't blow off Joss Stone and Melissa doing a fine job of Janis Joplin. And a bald Melissa at that. She put on a great performance, despite anything else going on

Didn't know the masters were going to be in HD. CBS does seem to be leading the pack in HD these days. Though their football coverage (at least in my area) was riddled with problems throughout the playoffs. All sorts of cut outs and random digital artifacts. Could be my cable provider, but I didn't see any of the same on Fox's coverage.
