I saw on Amazon that they're releasing the DVD of Episode I and II on march 22. Is it a modified edition or are they re-releasing it just to make a lump of cash before the release of Episode III?

I'm holding out for the boxed set containing episodes 1 thru 6 and the Star Wars Holiday Special (from '78) and the Ewok Adventure (from '84).

That's what I tought. This is getting crazy. I hope people will get it and stop buying every single special edition that comes out. I would be nice for Lucas to lose money for once. Maybe he would let Star Wars rest et get on with his life,

It's just a re-release to go with the final movie.

You're going to have to buy them all over again in High Definition whenever the format wars are over. It'll either be HD-DVD or Blu-ray.

Sure, but how many times does one need to buy them? Star Wars has become nothing more than a cash grab.

What's he going to add in for the 34.5th anniversary super duper ultimate collector set?

People will still buy it. AS long as they keep adding things to intice people to buy it people will.

Either way I doubt Lucas would lose too much money if people stopped buying the Star Wars Movies. He makes so much on other things.

Personally, I wish that he would release Ep. 4, 5, and 6 as they were originally released. I am not interested in the revamped versions.

That'll be the Star Wars Classic DVD box set. I would imagine 2007 or 2008

I've been telling people this for a long time... especially the people that buy 4-5 DVDs a week. Within 3 years HD-DVD will be considerably more popular.

Both movies have actually been out of print for a bit.

And none of your older DVDs will suddenly stop working either. (Unless the HD players are incompatible).

I converted my (admittedly very small) collection from VHS to DVD because the picture quality was WAY better. Yes HD-DVD and Blu-ray are much better high-definition formats, but (for ME) are not enough to get me to convert my entire collection again.

After (whichever high definition DVD format wins) becomes popular, I will buy new movies (not already in my collection) in that format. The only reason I would consider buying things I already have in HD format is if the extra content is different enough to justify it (for ME). In other words, if the extra materials are identical (or if there is substantial overlap) to the standard format DVD I already own, forget it. The picture quality is good enough for me as it is. BUT, if there is sufficient new material to add to something, I'll might buy it.

I'm not someone who blindly buys every DVD ever released as part of some movie franchise. (ooh! ooh! They released the super duper mega deluxe edition of XXXX! I must buy it to add to the 15 other copies of XXXX I already own!) Nor am I someone who converts his entire collection every time something new comes along. (Well, that's it. I finally converted my entire collection of 10,000 DVDs to HD-DVD. What's that? Now Super HD-DVDs are coming out? Wow! I can't wait to spend my money converting my entire collection of 10,000 HD-DVDs to Super HD-DVD!)

That's how I feel about it too. Besides, resolution isn't really that important unless you have one of those expensive TVs to watch it on.

I'm glad that I have already purchased mine. Looking forward to episode 3.

Oh BTW when they re-mastered the Classic SW DVD's they actually mastered them in high def for the upcoming HD-DVD's (or blueray).

So the DVD's you just bought will be worthless in less than 2 years.

If you care about that sort of thing, then yes. But I don't, so the ones I bought will not be worthless to me five years from now.

I saw a few HD-DVDs and BlueRay Discs at the CES and I have to admit it's pretty amazing. Way nicer than standard definition DVD,

You mean I'm going to lose out on my $35 investment? Shucks!

I guess I'll at least have the memory of watching them a few times to keep me warm when the impending HD apocalypse renders my valuable DVD collection worthless, leaving me penniless and on the street.

[/sarcasm] I'm not a financial genius, but I'm pretty sure the DVDs I just bought are already pretty much worthless.

Maybe these new releases of I and II are special editions that have been reworked so that their plots are made to fall in line with the canon of the original trilogy instead of the other way around...

HD-DVD has been designed to play on current generation DVD players. You don't have to buy a new DVD player to play HD-DVD movies.

However, I'm sure if you buy an actual HD-DVD player they'll have more spiffy features.

Wait a quick second there, andreas. If you live in an area in which the average girl is anywhere near the physical beauty of Natalie Portman, I'll hop on a plane and set up residence right quick. Perhaps you have beer goggles on, but the average girl most assuredly does not come even close. Sure, Natalie Portman is not a ten, but she is damn pretty. She may come off as a twit in interviews and reveal herself to be completely politically naive (she apparently did not get much out of that Ivy League "education"), but it is absurd to claim she isn't hot. I recognize the fact that the preceding paragraph has "stereotypical nerd" written all over it, but I am just being honest.

Wow, olePigeon, I had absolutely no idea that was the case. If HD-DVD has not only official format backing but also forward compatibility (is that what it's referred to as) with current DVD players, it's essentially guaranteed to blow Blu-Ray out of the water. Which marketing genius decided to call it Blu-Ray, anyway?

In any event, people are not going to be easily convinced to buy new shiny HD versions of the DVDs, after having transitioned from VHS so recently. Any executive who believes otherwise is certainly deluded. But given olePigeon's info it seems that HD-DVDs will gradually supplant standard definition discs, and there should not be a problem. If people are not coerced into purchasing new players to use the new discs, it will be a non-issue.

Now that you insist: Body=OK, face=average.

And of course I'm living in an area where only the worlds most beautiful woman reside. Unfortunately, there's no way to get here and cameras don't work (due to all the beauty, perhaps), so I'm unable to give proof of it. Sorry. But it's so nice to live here…

HD-DVD uses a blue laser, like the Blu-Ray Discs but the're not compatible. Both format have big companies behind it and we are in the middle of a Beta vs VHS war before it's even released. Expect JVC to release a player than can read both format.
A single layer HD-DVD disc holds 15Gb (30Gb for dual) of data and a Blu-Ray dics hold 27Gb (54Gb for dual). They can't play on a current generation player. The current players use a red laser with a longer wavelenght than a blue laser. It's not precise enough for the smaller pits and much more narrow track pitch of HD-DVDs and Blu-ray Discs.

There is actually a few HD films ond standards DVDs availlable. The're encoded with Windows Media 9 codecs, so you need a WM9 compatible player. It's OK, but it's not the real thing.

The first 4.7GB is readable on existing DVD players, but high definition content will require an HD-DVD player. That means it may be possible to buy an HD-DVD movie and have the option of playing the movie in SD or HD, HD will require the HD-DVD player.

HD-DVD player can, of course play normal DVDs as well.
