They mention the "analog hole" and the way they plugged it is that all discs will be formatted in the Universal Disc Format and therefore would crash DVD ripper programs but here's my question
For us lucky OS X folk - If you formatted your disk UFS+ or whatever it is and then installed a ripping program, would this get around the new copy protection?
Second, isn't it going to be easy for software makers to just create a file format conversion utility in their ripping software? Sure it's an extra step and probably processor intensive, but it doesn't sound like anything revolutionary they are doing here.
It might stop 97% of "mainstream" rippers....but only for maybe a year and then this new copy protection will be broken and those 97% of "mainstream" rippers will be ripping again.
Wouldn't it be more logical for the MPAA who probably pay Macrovision bundles to develop and deploy this stuff spend that same money on working with companies like Apple to develop an iTunes for Movies that had a FairPlay-esque DRM to make everyone happy?

In an ideal world there would be no thievery and no need to lock doors.

In a world where people had buttholes on their head, they would have buttholes on their head.
Fortunately or Unfortunately there is neither an ideal world nor a world where people have buttholes on their head.

this isn't a matter of thievery because there are many valid reasons for ripping a dvd. i back of a dvd on my laptop if i want to watch it w/o the disc like on a trip or something. i will be pissed if there is not a hack to get around this i have lots of dvd's and like to back them up.

So long as there's something to read it, there will be a way to crack it.

And in the same vain, if someone built it, another person can clearly disassemble it.

Ya all of their previous ventures have been a smash success. Remember how PC users got over the CD protection by holding down the Shift key? Or how bout that black marker trick.

Odds are their copy protection doesn't "support" macs and will probably have no effect on us.

Or the disks simply won't play on a Mac.

I am guessing here, but I'm pretty sure UFS is Unix File System, not "Universal Disk Format" (the letters aren't even in the right order). Therefore, my deduction is that no, formatting your disk as UFS won't help you get around it.

Oh duh, even I didn't see that the letters don't match at all. Hey isn't that the format that the PSP uses?

That's UMD. UDF is the DVD filesystem. UFS is indeed Unix File System. UMD stands for Universal Media Disc.

The simple fact is, there is no way to add new copy protection without breaking compatibility with older DVD players.
