If you wanted to turn a Mac mini into a Media Center, you'll need an external TV Tuner (2 or more would be best) and probably a larger Hard drive. If someone made an accessory designed like that, with TV Tuners, MultiMedia card inputs, hard drives, and rear port... then it could fill most of the holes needed for the Mac Mini to be a viable platform. It still looks futuristic and is thin, so I think that would look nice near some other AV components.

Hard part will actually be the software that needs to accompany it. Linking it with iTunes purchased music and dealing with the sub par video performance are two trouble areas that come to mind. A good scheduler and interface should not be too difficult to come up with.

That add on is 4x the size of the Mini and pretty much a G5 in its side. Pathetic.

What you don't think this sorta thing is coming? It'll just be done well. Either that or we'll see a set top box very much like the mini. It just won't look like crap...

Are people really going to buy something like that? I have an EyeHome from elgato and it does many of the best features of the unit. Plus it's only $200

That's not the point.

Given it was designed smaller than that, a dock with card readers, a large display and extra ports would be a winner. Include a 160 GB hardrive and there ye go, Media Center...

Surely someone can design these features into a better box? It's funny how Apple can be its own worst enemy. They design things so nice that it's hard for the accessory makers to live up to our standards.

It's intended to fit on an equipment rack. thus, it's 17" wide. There are worse ways to add a couple of external hard drives and some video/audio adapters and such.

This is the type of thing I would love to see.

Not necessarily everything displayed there. But a series of add-ons in the same shape and styling of the mini.

The card slots are ugly and sorta pointless.

Not if you are a digital photography nut, then they're extremely nice to have in one location.

Doesn't make them any less ugly on something that looks like a stereo.

For those interested, the ideas suggested for the two layers that aren't obvious in that picture, were an ADSL or Cable Modem and a Firewire HD.

Wow, the idea of a modular system connected in the back by Firewire and/or Ethernet with separate components. AWESOME.

Useful things I'd buy:

1) external HD in mini look
2) remote control, receiver & display
3) maybe: card reader
4) multi-port hub

I like... great design especially for those that "just" want one of the components.

The original wasn't meant for production it was proof of concept. That said the second idea = MUCH BETTER. Actually if you made em all 2 inches high you could have it either stacked or laid beside themselves. It's a great idea either way. I think Apple really should look at coming out with some sweet things like that. Think for the iTunes mini box have the aluminumy click wheel (could you make a touch click wheel out of aluminum though?) and have one with a remote also with the lovable click wheel and you have some sweet stuff. Then bundle some sort of iVideo software with one with some 72rpm HDs in set up kinda like a RAID (think two HDs or something) and allow for streaming via air port over a network. Dang you could have a really sweet home entertainment setup. As for speakers, I think those Apple would probably leave up to every other developer to come up with but maybe not.

Think of where you would want to place a mini in a home theater environment... The compartment space where you store your DVD player, AV Reciever, etc, probably is going to be somewhat limited height wise. Anything taller than a AV reciever proibably would not be to functional, and the stacked mini design is definately taller than that. It would be easier to have external devices along the side of the mini than on top of the mini, and that's way I think something like the first idea where the low height of the mini is maintained, and the whole dimensions don't exceed that of a DVD player.

Biggest waste of 20 of my minutes

The idea of all these docks are that you can have the ports on the front and most importantly, add a 3.5 inch hard drive.
