Is that white bubble robot Marvin?

Anyway, looks pretty funny. I hope they do a good job capturing the spirit of the book.

Where's Zaphod's other head?

I still prefer the British TV version, complete with cheesy "special effects."

BBC one is great. This one looks like they're trying to turn it into an action movie. I hope they don't lose all of the subtle humour.

Am I the only one that thought the trailer was horrible? They put in all these humor lines that just... weren't funny. Instead of zany and ridiculous in a smart kind of way like the book, it seemed to come across just... dumb.

I dunno, hope I'm wrong. But i'm not hopeful.

Hmmm. I don't know about this. But you got to remember that they cut these trailers to make them appealing to a wide an audience as possible, hence the focus on action and *shudder* slapstick.

I'm crossing my fingers.

PS. It looks like his second head is about to pop out there before they cut to another scene.

I'm not buying Marvin as a bubble-bot, but other than that, it looks like it could be good.
Provided they don't 'hollywoodize' it too much, to make it more 'accessible' to the masses.

Or The Tall Blond Man With One Black Shoe. Or Cousin, Cousine. Or any film with any degree of wit, humor and intelligence that gets "remade" by HollyWeird.

I'll hold my judgement until I've seen it.

The American accents are a bit off-putting, as is Marvin's "cute" appearance, as far as the trailer goes.

Other than that, there's no telling.

Hey that's Mos Def playing Ford, cool. Well, not that cool, his last album was very disappointing. No wonder if he's busying himself with being an actor. Looking forward to the film though...

Agreed, round and white doesn't come off as very depressed visually. The trailers seem to dodge him, so they might know that fans aren't going to like the hollywood interpretation of him.

If you read up about the 'new' Marvin on the official site, I think DNA approved this incarnation himself - and if you watch the videos of Marvin, his large drooping bulbous head perfectly exaggerates his depressed nature.

I'm not too keen on the over reliance on American actors (this seems to be the main criticism of people who have seen the preview) as they don't seem to convey the subtle humour very well.

Also they try and do away with Zaphod's second head for most of the film, to skirt round the extra visual costs this would have created.

BTW one of the reasons that this film finally got made, is that DNA is dead - most of the previous directors bailed on the project over the years due to his demands.

That does not bode well for any hopes of the film being faithful to the spirit (at the very least) of the books.

No no no. Where do you even back up stuff like this? As one who has read both of his biographies and the story behind this new incarnation of this film I highly disagree.

DNA left this entirely in Hollywood's hands after being discouraged by the first incarnations of the script. The project was left dead until a new script was written incorporating all new material written by DNA himself, the story, and posthumously found material. It was only put into production when the director(s) and the producers (all very very much fans of the original books) found it to be any where near as funny as the book itself.

The only thing I hate about this trailer is the crappo quality it is in. Come on, release the Hi-Res QuickTime trailer already!! Amazon gets a big negative in my book for sitting on the trailer and for distributing it in a stream-only (Flash?) media.

The window is small, the framerate is low and sometimes you get to see it in *half* the size for no apparent reason. That's very small. Like the trailers distributed on CDs in Quicktime 2. 100x80 pix or so.

They've only got the teaser up at Apple.com and the official H2G2 website as well.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

In particular, I really, really don't care for the Arthur and Trillian love connection. It feels out of place, it feels forced and at best it's corny. There should be an attraction, sure, but in the last act they really focus on Arthur's undying love and Trillian's realization that she wants someone like Arthur, not the swinging dick rock star like Zaphod, to the point where when the mice are about to cut Arthur's brain out, trying to find the question (to the answer from Deep Thought... the infamous "42"), he says something like, "The only question that really matters is if she'll say yes!"

Also the female Vice President that's tracking Zaphod and the Heart of Gold down because she secretly loves him didn't really work, either.

There, it's out. That's the worst thing about this early, early screening. The Arthur/Trillian/Zaphod triangle is the only really serious mistake, in my opinion. The rest of the movie is not just passable, but near perfect.
LOVE TRIANGLE? Fer shiznit! Well, they did end up having a kid together, but they never loved eachother *sigh*

Advance screening review

I think arthur is well cast... and zaphod seems right, but the missing head... tsk.

The clip didn't really show Ford in a good light, he didn't seem annoyingly eclecticly fordish (from an arthurian pov). Kind of bland.

I can see the irony in having a "cute" Marvin be depressed.

At another forum today I saw that someone had said, "at least they shot some scenes in the Dr. Who quarry."

I have read both those biographies also, and so that's where I got my info

From what I've read the friction arose because DNA wanted it to be as faithful to the original as possible, yet the writers needed the film to have a conventional beginning middle and end in order to be a hit Hollywood film - the irony being of course that the books never had this.

I think the film is possible the best meld of the two from what I've seen, so it should be good viewing.

[I see you've picked up on those previews I referred to]

So now it's gone from the Amazon page? All I get is a stupid membership ad.

Anyone know about where I can download the trailer?

Well, he did preface the review by saying that he was only part-way into Life, the Universe, and Everything, so it figures it would catch him off-guard if he's a careless reader...

I thought so as well originally, but it quickly grew on me. Give it another listen. Just don't compare it to the first album -- it won't win that battle.

I'm looking forward to the movie.

The music isn't ready yet. It is common for trailers to "borrow" music from other films.

It was from MIB. Keep an eye on this site. It should be updated soon. That site shows what music is used in trailers, and is handy if you find you like a piece of music in a trailer.

Quite a few. I would have thought either theme from Stargate or Carl Orff's - O fortuna (from Carmina Burana) would be the ones most used for trailers. They are on the top ten, but apparantly Come See The Paradise is the most used with 27 trailers.
