I need to illustrate a schedule for the next 5-6 months for research i'm going to be doing. I have used Microsoft Project on Windows, and was wondering if there's an equivalent application that runs on OSX.

Fast Track Schedule as mentioned by Pigeon is probably the most comprehensive package for the Mac. You might also want to take a look at PMX - IIRC (from downloading the demo a little while ago), it was more "Mac-like" than FTS.
