Holy crap, that can't be right. Can Microsoft really be that bizarre?

If so, at least they didn't name it i-XPedition...

That's REALLY bad, but it's not like Apple hasn't had any stinkers. OS X 10.3 Panther, for example, is not a very good name. What is it called? OS Ten Ten Point Three? OS "X"? Tiger? And what about how the upcoming rumoured "Graphulator" and "Bonjour" programs?

Then there's iPod, which doesn't make any sense and sounds like the name of a pogostick. Don't forget Mac Mini, which sounds like some awful place in scotland or a type of McDonald's cheeseburger.

Okay, my rant is done.

Apple could call the next major iteration of Mac OS "Assberg" and it would still trump this offering from the marketing brainiacs at Microsoft.

Very true, But on the other hand, Microsoft could package Win 3.1.1 as Windows e-XP, charge $200 for it and get millions of orders nonetheless. The gullible Wintel folk would then struggle to convince themselves this latest version of Windows is clearly the best OS ever made.

I'm starting to see more Windows users eyeing my Mac more now then ever. I think many are getting tired of the Microsoft BS machine.

If nothing else, I continue to see improvements with OS X. They may not happen as fast as I would like, but there are improvements.

Why don't the folks in Redmond just get it over with and call it "Tiger". At this point, what's the point of pretending not to rip off Apple?

Why should they stop the standard system? Name + version number. Its simple, easy to identify quickly, and it doesn't make it seem like the next version will be SOO great that you need to give it its own wacky name.

I think that last bit is actually something of a problem for OS X. It's hard for people to get excited about a point upgrade, since a .1 upgrade for most software is not significant. Apple should try and get people excited every now and again about their OS. When my windows friends read about the upcoming release of 10.4, they automatically think "whats the difference, when is 11 coming out?"

I think that's one of the reasons Apple has started using cat names for each upgrade, in order to show us customers that there really is a difference between each release.

I actually like the 10.something naming convention.

That said... this e-XPedition... could get creepy... I'd laugh if I heard people actually calling it that...

Apple used to have really cool code names for their products. The Power Mac G3 All-In-One was codenamed Artemis, for example, and the first PCI Power Macs were codenamed Power Surge (as in Iguana iguana powersurgius, a phrase some old fans might remember).

Once they started making the codenames public, they started to go downhill. However, they do have a way to fall before they reach this level. What's next: Windows e-XPerience Hyper Turbo Super Karate Monkey Death Fighter Rainbow Edition Advance?

i am starting to mix them up

which one is which, which one does what and etc

was that 10.2 or 10.3... no that feature is coming in 10.4...

by the time 10.7 comes out it's going to be a pain.

it looks like tiger is going to be something special and be the last OS update in awhile. so make it 11 and move on.

Microsoft's silence and patience in developing Longhorn is causing a lot of people to think that Windows is on its decline, that Longhorn is going to suck, and that people are all going to want to switch to Mac. However, when Longhorn is actually released, Mac might as well call it quits. Since the release of Windows XP, the Mac's marketshare has declined from around 5% to 1%. Mac fans think "maybe this going to be our year, maybe people will be so tired of waiting for the next version of windows that Mac OS X will be adopted by a stampede of angry XP users!". Of course, when the time comes that Longhorn is finally released, any chance of a large scale Mac conversion will be gone. At that point, Steve Jobs will be very happy that he has the iPod to carry Apple, because Mac OS X will be even more irrelevant than it is now. [/inflammatory but true post]

1 percent? where did you pull that number from? Anyway, just to feed fuel to the fire I'm going to answer this. Once people find out the system resources Longhorn is going to take, once they find out that it might NOT be backwards compatible I think the reverse will happen. It's happening now. People are starting to get sick of Microsoft's crap and they are starting to look for alternatives. By the time longhorn is released Apple will probably be releasing OS X 10.5 or 6 by then. Once people really see what Longhorn is about I think there will be a Stampede to OS X. More and more people are switching even though the process is a bit slow at the moment.

You are starting to see more people with Macs. OS X Irrelevant?
