I am sooo ready to sell my 17" iMac G5. This whole fan noise high pitch sound thing is driving me nuts! Here is a link to the iMac forum with my problem if anyone is interested. I posted a few times:
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...p;pagenumber=2
I didn't repost in the iMac forum because I'm not looking for technical advice. I guess this is just more of less a rant
At this point the fan seems to be getting "off center" as it's going around. The noise coming from it is starting to change. It seems like it has started to rattle. I'm really not sure how to describe it.
So, I called Apple again today. When I was connected with the first Applecare Rep. he tried to tell me that I would have to pay for the call. I don't have the extended Applecare but this is an ongoing problem. He still tried to tell me since I was out of the 3 month time frame for phone support that I would have to pay for the call. I finally convinced him that since I had called on this same exact unresolved problem that I should not have to pay for the call.
After all that my call was transferred to "Customer Support" and they told me the same thing as before. The engineers are working on it but they don't have a solution yet. All I get is the same crap. They are sorry but there isn't anything that can be done. I was told today that even the new systems that are being shipped have not been fixed. The fix may come from a hardware update or software update. Basically I am being told that I am stuck with a faulty computer. When I told him about the change in the fan he didn't seem to want to discuss it.
I have been firm but nice with the way I feel about this when I call. What do all you good people think? I am ready to ask for a refund (which I don't think would ever happen) or an exchange. I'm at the end of my rope when it comes to this thing. My better half uses my iBook 300MHz because the noise is so annoying. She would rather do all her work on it than have to deal with the noise of the iMac. I have owned many Macs but this one is by far the most annoying. My PowerMac 9600 wasn't near as bad as this thing. My current cheapo PC isn't as annoying. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ok, so as far as real advice is concerned: obviously, Apple doesn't know how to fix it. The question becomes: What do you want ?
You didn't tell how long you have had the iMac, so I don't know if returning it to Apple would be an option at all.
But before you get back to Apple, have a viable idea what you want them to do for you !
So, ifyou get stuck with Apple support, ask to be transfered to Customer Relations. That's a different department that has the authority to deal with things outside the regular rules and steps involved in Apple support.
They got me a new battery for my 2.5 year old iBook when OS 10.2.3 or so killed the batteries. Note that I did NOT have Apple Care, and yet I got a brand spanking new battery for free.
That's my $ 0.02.

I got it on October 15th. Since then I have called 6 or 7 times along with a trip to the Apple Store. The first call was maybe a week after I got it. Apple sent a new power supply, told me to reinstall Panther, had me take it to the Apple Store, and I was finally told they couldn't help.
Customer Relations sounds like my next step. I would actually like to get this thing fixed. I don't have a problem with anything but the noise. I asked the person that I spoke with today if this problem would actually be fixed. He told me that he couldn't give me any kind of guarantee.
If I can't get it fixed I would like to get a refund. An exchange would probably not help since the problem is wide spread. Also, I have a BTO with bluetooth and wireless keyboard and mouse. I don't think Apple gives a refund for a BTO.

I believe there's a class action lawsuit against Apple going on right now with regards to their scabby AppleCare service. Perhaps you should sign up!

Class action lawsuits only help the lawyers.
