Hehe, well a thread such as this was bound to happen anyway, so might as well get it out of the way.

Yes, that's right. I'm up at Edinburgh, where we're enjoying some dreadfully bad weather today.

How does the Australian Apple store manage to have a 6 digit phone number? Do residences have extra digits in their #'s.
Just wondering.

Just wondering.
6 digit '13' numbers are available for purchase over here for insane amounts of money. Well, more than 1300 xxx xxx or 1800 xxx xxx numbers anyway.
Just like directory services are often 4 digit numbers (1234, 12456 etc), six digit numbers are for companies with some $$ to spend on their number.

Cool, didn't know that. I thought #'s were actually getting longer for the most part. I don't think I've ever seen anything besides directory services or 911 numbers that were less than XXX XXX XXXX.

Cheaper iPods all around, mini at $200 finally. The 40 gigger at $300. Sweet. (edit: awww, it's only the B&W 20 Gigger. I guess they are phasing out the regular iPods in favor of iPod photos. I hope we get a name change when the B&W finally goes away for good.
B&W, 20GB for $300 or Color 30GB for $350. Seems like a no brainer.

Apple is really playing the "bait and switch" mentality of many people...
iPod shuffle 512 = $99
or for $50 more
iPod shuffle 1GB (twice as much memory!) = $149
or for $50 more
iPod mini 4GB (four times the memory and a screen!)
or for $50 more
iPod mini 6GB (another 2GB!)
or for $50 more
iPod (with a 20 GB Drive!!!)
or for $50 more
iPod (with 10 more GB and a color screen!!!)

You are right, but they have so many different flavors that they can't really do much more with the pricing. I'm sure they are holding off on some specs just to keep it reasonable.
Personally I think the iPod 40GB B&W should be $300 now. It should have more room than the color above it. Otherwise the B&W should just be cancelled. It has no features that are better than the iPod photo at all.
One could argue that each of the other iPods has their own merits. But yeah, it's a marketing thing for sure.
However, I wouldn't describe it as bait and switch.

Actually, bait and switch is a sales tactic, not an advertising tactic... but you know what I mean. I'm sure many people will be walking in looking to buy a $99 shuffle and walking out with a mini. I doubt it's going to go the other way.
:-) but who knows?

Looks like the gold iPod mini has become a limited edition.
Coincidentally gold would have been my last choice of mini colors. Green then pink then blue then silver then gold.
I got a green iPod mini.. now that blue one would look nice in my pocket. Still, I have less than 2GBs on my iPod so I don't really need a new one

I guess USB 2.0 is everywhere by now and Mac users have some extra Firewire cables around somewhere.

Is the USB 2 cable included?
We should thank HP for starting this lovely trend... I remember working at Best Buy when 1/2 of their boxes had them and 1/2 didn't.

UK Prices are up at the store now:
iPod shuffle:
512Mb £69, 1GB £99
iPod mini:
4Gb £139, 6Gb £169
iPod mono screen:
20GB £209, 20GB U2 £249
iPod photo:
30GB £249, 60GB £309
So my 40GB mono screen bought last August (I bought it before the photo models came out, it was the top iPod at the timeisn't available any more, but £10 more than what I paid could get me a 60GB iPod photo now. The same goes for these prices though:
£69, £99, £139, £169, £209, £249, £309.
Evenly spread price points from £69 to £309, nice!

That fcking sucks. Seriously. I do think I may replace my mini with a 6GB mini just for the battery but separate FW ? That's just stupid, I dont want to pay 19 for a stupid cable. I could try to sell my mini without the FW but I don't know if that will work.
EDIT: it doesn't even come with an AC adaptor, now that sucks.

Funny + ironic when Mac users are being screwed by Apple because of PeeCee users and their USB stupidity.
I'm assuming a USB cable is included - you'll need something to connect the iPod to a computer.

Yes it comes with a USB2 cable. I'm glad I got my iPod Photo before this. Now back to putting more music on it...
They should have included that cable they sell that has both Firewire and USB2 End on it.
That iPod Photo Camera connector is very compelling though. I'll be picking one of those up when it comes out.

Through the USB2.
I can't help feel that Apple is throwing away the lubrication for its Mac customers. Only a year ago most Macs didn't have USB2

Yep, same as the shuffle.
I'm disappointed that we don't have firewire as an option. On the plus note, it could mean they are planning to go FW800 on the Mac.
I dunno, I'm sure they just didn't want to worry about having two sets of stock.
Oneota, yeah I think they ditched all but the 20GB B&W version (the most popular size) and will likely ditch that for a color version when certain conditions are met. Methings B&W will be a mini only thing in the not-so-distant future.

I can't understand the whining over the lack of a FW cable.
Apple lowered the prices $50. A FW cable and AC adapter cost $48.
If you want the adapter and cable you now save $2 over what you would pay yesterday.
If you don't want either of those two items, you save even more $$.
Where is the downside here? I'm not getting why people are whining.

^ Because complaints are a necessity on a new product release, dur!
Kidding, but seriously, it's not *that* big of a deal, it's just Apple leaning heavily towards Windows-based users (good call, bring 'em over here) by including USB only. Also, the lack of an AC adapter was strictly a cost savings decision...I personally ALWAYS use my FireWire cable connected to my PC or Mac to charge my iPod. My AC adapter is still wrapped in that thin plastic actually, but my g/f ONLY uses the AC adapter to charge her 1G mini, so I guess it depends on preference whether it would bother one much or not. It's not THAT big of a downfall though b/c ppl's main complaint is "vacations! road trips! I need a power adapter!" in which you'd probably buy a car charger anyway.
