You ever see that episode of the Simpsons where they think Mr. Burns is dead so Homer and Smithers tie some string to his joints and have him dance for the shareholders on stage? I have a sneaking suspicion the same thing is going on with the Pope.

Let's start a poll!
The Pope is:
1. Alive
2. Dead
3. In Some Other State of Existence (aka Undead)

I would have thought he be excited to live in heaven but it looks like all his charity work here isn't quite done yet

My guess is that he is still alive, but will probably die very soon. Mind you, I've made this prediction many times over the years and always been wrong, but with this sudden failing health, I think it may really be the end for him this time.
A shame, that. There's not a lot of love lost between me and the Pope, but I respect him a lot more than I do most of his predecessors.

Ditto. As a Jew I don't think much about Catholicism or the papacy. I do have my qualms with the historical Church. And I also don't like the movement to make Isabella a saint. But I certainly don't wish the pope ill. Some of you are saying you expect him to die, which he will, while others are seemingly rooting for his death. Many righteous people will grieve deeply for his loss, including good friends of mine. Do any of you believe him to be an evil man?

Maybe it's too early for me - but I haven't read one post in this thread in which the respective poster seemed to be expressing joy about the Pope dying. Am I missing something here?

While I have no clue what kind of belief system (if any) our Belgian friend adheres to, his "we can only hope" could just as well be an expression of support uttered by a deeply religious catholic (even though I have my doubts about that ). As far as the rest is concerned, imho nothing but harmless (and more or less dumb) "jokery" (including myself here as well) - "ssdd" in the lounge.
But I guess it all depends on where one is coming from ... and since I've always been a firm believer in the inherent good of mankind ( ) , I naturally assumed the guys were poking harmless fun instead of spitefully wishing poor Bernie, uhm ... Paul was dead.
P.S. Re-reading some of the posts - I didn't know the Pope wrote "books" - more like pamphlets AFAIK. Or is that what his writings are actually called in English?

Well to be honest I'm not religious in any way (I actually hate any form of religion). But I said "we can only hope" because the pope really looks sad. It makes the church look silly and the man is suffering so that's why I hope he dies or stops being pope in one way or another. I don't exactly wish him dead, but he's just sad right now.
And yes I know seriously catholic people that would like to see him die because he is soo sad.
Nothing personal against the man.

I admit to not following the politics of Catholicism much, but last I checked the Pope couldn't name his own successor, nor can one be determined unless there is no Pope (due to death or resignation).
While there is a clear process for determining a successor, the politics involved are hideous, and the process can take an inordinate amount of time since the vote must be unanimous.

I believe the reports that he is breathing on his own. My prayers are that he may be comfortable, it is up to God as to his recovery.

Wow - we're not getting any quicker in the head as we get older, are we? There's nothing to "peddle" (that is so not a word*, Zimph. Confess, you made that up.) forward, backwards or sideways - "from" or "to".
You used to be able to recognize instantly when someone was directing a dumb joke your way - what the hell (I thought the theme fits the topic at hand) happened to you? You're not Zimph - you have got to be an impostor! ... Cash? Is that you? ... Ambush?? Give Zimph back his account - now!!
Aaawwww - that's not even fun enough to start arguing semantics over.
**mopes as he hits submit button**
C'mon - you don't actually think I was trying to pick a fight with you over whether or not these guys were serious in their wishing that the Pope was dead, do you? That is so not the Zimph I remember.
(edit) ... * - Well, not the proper word, that is. Since I wasn't really trying to sell you something - this time around.

Actually, "peddle" is a word, meaning "to sell". It's an archaic term, so you don't hear it much anymore, but consder the almost-as-archaic noun "peddlar", meaning merchant.
There is no verb "to backpeddle", though.

Bush, maybe, but the Pope? As I've already said, there's little love lost between me and the man, and there are many unkind things I could call him, but pathetic isn't one of them. What makes you think he's pathetic?
