Awww... So cute.
Nintendogs will apparently come in three flavors, featuring 15 different breeds between the versions. Holy crap, these dogs are so cute they burn my retinas. I just wish they had thought to include a couple of large breeds like a Great Dane. Here’s the full list of dogs, via Planet Gamecube:
Dachshund and Friends Version
- Mini Dachshund
- Mini Schnauzer
- Pug
- Yorkshire Terrier
- German Shepherd
Chihuahua and Friends Version
- Chihuahua
- Cocker Spaniel
- Labrador Retriever
- Beagle
- Shihtzu
Shiba and Friends Version
- Shiba
- Mini Pinscher
- Welsh Corgie Puppy
- Shetland Sheepdog
- Toy Poodle

Because real pets are under-represented.

They need to come out with something for the DS that uses the touch screen other than for a map. Seriously, i already saw a trailer for this and you tickle the puppies tummy. How much fun is that!

THIS is what Nintendo meant all along when they said we needed something "innovative".
Oh, and it's been done before in Japan. I was watching a segment on X-Play where there are these Japanese games for the PS2 where you date virtual women, using the controller to "touch" them. Sexy Beach 2 was one of them. Such a stupid concept, and we all know that the Tamaguchi (sp?) craze died. So now Nintendo's using the dual screen to marry the two types of games. Wow, that's innovation for you!

tomagochi cost $6 and was small enough for a keychain. The same can't be said about the Nintendo DS.

Even worse is you can play jump rope with a puppy. The music is HORRID!
Why can't they give you all the dogs on one cart? Storage limitation or cash grab?

That is so ... odd.
Funny thing is when a kid tries to pet the dog and touches the screen and gets a big old static electric shock.

Duh, cash grab. Remember a couple months back they put out the Nintento "Classic" series on Gameboy SP for $20 apiece? One 20 year old game for $20. Puh-leeze.

I think they did a good job using the touch screen for the mini games in Mario 64 and in Metroid. Those were anything but straight-up maps.

The problem with those games are they also tried to replace the lack of analog controls with the touch screen which didn't make things better.

A hands on review.
http://nintendo.gamerfeed.com/gf/news/8453/
If it was on the PSP, i'd applaud the fact they are catering to a differnt segment of the population apart from middle ages male technophiles....and then maybe chuckel. thats cause i'm a 24 yr old male. But i have yet to see any games written for the Sony or Microsoft platforms, do ANYTHING different(a new genre of game, a new camera control system, a better ergonomic controller) when it comes to gameing. I think eye-toy was one on the PS2 side, and it was a real contribution to gaming. Nintendo, has not always been innovative with every game they release, but they have brought a lot more innovation to gaming than both Sony and Microsoft combined. And while Sony and Microsoft concentrate on middle aged males, it's nice to see Nintendo, cater to everyone.... or at least try to do so.
Here's an analogy. Most men like action movies. But at some point action movies are action movies are action movies. Then a company like Pixar comes along and starts making movies that cater to men and women of all ages. It's a difficult art to master.... but i do give credit to those who try.

"We (as an industry) are getting smaller in how we define progress. Making games look photorealistic is not the only way to define success. ... Some day, our games won't look any better. What do we do then?"
"When is the last time we invented a new genre? Our race tracks, our bosses, our heroes are all starting to look alike. ... We spend more time and money chasing the same players, but who are we leaving behind? Are we making games only for ourselves?"
-Satoru Iwata (President, Nintendo)
Inspirational to say the least. Thinking out of the box, breaking out of the mold, for sure. It's stuff like this i admire and try to support. Which is why i am a Mac user and developer.
-Cheers.

The difference is that Pixar does it right and makes money. If that analogy were one-to-one, the GC wouldn't have floundered like it did, would it?

Nintendo does it right as well, and makes money as well..unlike that other company. And 14 million units sold at a profit on each unit (not counting software) is in no way a loss....by any measure.

Yup, the gameboy is owned mostly by a younger crowed. Also the older crowed hasn't had any choice, that is until midnight tonight.
Keep in mind that the 20-30 crowed has more money than kids.

You're saying the older crowd doesn't own many Game Boys? My dad had a Game Boy before I did...

A quote from todays Guardian (UK) sums it up quite nicely I think:
‘While the Nintendo DS as an eccentric and fun little games toy, PSP is an ambitious portable entertainment platform, a true cultural successor to the walkman’.

Maybe in your opinion. But so far, They make and sell millions of consoles(both portable and home), and make money doing it.
And at the same time, taking risks in 'new directions'... innovating, while maintaining a very healthy bank account.
And yes, they claim the PSP is the greatest thing since the walkman.... like they did with mini disc players, MP3 CD players, and ATRAX (or whatever).
Personally, i beleive the iPod is the greatest thing since the walkman.
P.S>> http://psp.ign.com/articles/599/599156p1.html (rather interesting lol)

Hate to have to resurrect a thread, but just though id bring to all your notice since the game is now available worldwide:
"With sales of over 160,000 units in its first weekend of availability in Europe, NintendogsTM is shaping up to replicate the incredible success enjoyed in the US and Japan. In the US, Nintendogs became not only the hottest-selling video game, but the best-selling new franchise ever for a portable video game system, while in Japan it has become a truly cultural phenomenon." - Gameindustry.bix
Rather good for a "stupid" idea eh ? critical acclaim, developer acclaim and public acclaim($$$$). Where's that awesome PSP game that transends the middle-aged-male-demographic now ?....oh yeah there isnt one. Talk about niches lol. By geeks for geeks.
Cheers

I wonder how long it will LAST. I bought a copy of Nintendogs for my daughter. She no longer plays it. It's stocked to the gills in stores. My friend at my local Gamestop says it doesn't sell nearly as well as it did the first 2 weeks.

First it was a "stupid" idea and now after it's sold through the roof in every sector and even boosted NDS sales, you want to know how long it will "last" ? lol....face it man....not everyone wants gore, grit n girls in their video games. Nintendo is ALSO catering to them as opposed to confining themselves to a specific niche/demographic, and from the looks of it, they are outselling a more "powerful" competitor, with more software and theyre making quite a bit of profit as well. The icing.....they are doing things differently by being innovative. All points goto Nintendo here, the competition gets none.
As far as your locale.....i wonder, should i take Nintendo's and journalists' testimony on sales figures, or a person who seems to hate Nintendo ?.....hmmmmm....i wonder. lol
