This is one I would be happy about. bluetooth as poor ass battery life, throughput and range.

If it does become more widespread, going into phones and everything, then I hope Apple puts it into the laptops sooner rather than later. By the time this matters, I'll be in the market for a new one anyway.

Wireless USB is designed to be used at ranges of less than 10 meters and will allow peak data speeds of 480 mbps.
At that speed, doesn't this also sound the death knell for the hypothetical 'wireless Firewire'?

And what about Bluetooth2? Is that any better than the first iteration?

I worry about the chances of Apple including this. They already include Wi-Fi as standard and Bluetooth as standard on some configs (essential to go with their wireless mouse). The idea of them adding a third wireless protocol to their machines in the near future seems unlikely.

You are right, but maybe not 3rd. Maybe just replacing the second. However, with their BT keyboard and mouse, it's probably not likely.

I also hope that they will make the decision with the next upgrades. Would hate to invest foolishly.

Not much at all. Problem with it also is pairing devices is a pain.

There's a correlation here:

Airport -> 54Mbps, eats a lot of power
Bluetooth -> 152kbps, eats little power
Wireless USB -> 480Mbps, buy a UPS with that mouse

My Bluetooth RS232 dongle requires 150mA when bursting bits. 0mA when idle. My wireless router eats 500mA continuously.

On what do you base your claim?

The **** battery life of any phone when bluetooth is on. Bluetooth headsets usually last 2 hours. Apples mice last about 4 weeks on average when RF mice last a year.

Because it's backed by intel, you KNOW it'll be the standard pretty fast.. watch all the cheapass integrated-everything boards come with it

Much like they killed firewire they'll kill bluetooth, and if you dont' think firewire is dead look at what apple's doing with their ipods

Useful for stuff like printers which are plugged in to the power I guess, but anything running at 480Mbps isn't going to go easy on batteries.

Oh and the odd bluetooth printer that has come out was a total disaster. It could only print simple things like text, if you threw a photo at it than it would pause and take about 20 min.

A WiFi mouse would last a lot less time.

RF mice last long because the radio protocol is designed to have no overhead for that function. Bluetooth mice must trnasmit a lot more bytes because of the packet overhead.

Wireless USB is not going to be any better in terms of energy efficiency.

You are better off with an RF mouse.
