My friend is coming down to visit but he's strapped for cash. He's trying to charge $500 onto his credit card so he can have cash for the week. I thought that PayPal would work, so he payed $500 to me and I was supposed to give him cash. Turns out I would have to upgrade to a business account to accept his transfer. I'm not gonna do that.

I have some cash to loan him, but I'd like to get payment from his CC so I'm not at a loss of $500 for too long. Any constructive ideas are appreciated.

No. To accept any CC funds you have to upgrade to a business account and watch PayPal take 3% of your money.

Can't he set up a PIN on his CC and just withdraw cash from the ATM? I can on mine at least.

Probably not, because he's pretty resourceful and would have found that out already. I'll run it by him though.

He said his cash advance charges are out of hand, so this may fall into that category.

Purchase a money order with the credit card and then cash the money order.

I've never seen a place that will accept a credit card payment for a Money Order...cash only.

Goto enough bars/liquor stores that will give you $20 over what you buy and put it on the card so that he gets the money. You'll get to $500 eventually.

easy way if you know some one that has a business is to have them charge there card for a purchase then give a cash refund.

I agree, but then the business would lose some money.

Sadly, I don't know anybody around here that runs credit cards at their business.

I'm thinking about fronting him the $500, setting up an eBay auction for $500 and making him pay for my fees. It'll only take 3 days (shortest auction I think?) and it'll cost him an extra $10 or so. What do you guys think?

Why does your friend need $500 in cash when he has a credit car that he could use to cover his expenses?

There are some things you cannot buy with a CC...

Just upgrade your paypal account. It doesn't cost you anything and will be a lot less hassle than fake ebay auctions and the like. All you need to remember to do is to pay your friend $500 minus the cut paypal takes. About 3.5% IIRC.

I'd offer you to use our business paypal account but all payment records go to our accountant and I'd have a hell of a time explaining this scenario to him.

Interesting point... even if a large majority required cash, couldn't he pay for your hotel/meals/etc. to even it out?

Zimph is on the right track, but I could have him pay my way - it's just alot of work keeping receipts and all. It's supposed to be a vacation...

There's a thing called a cash advance on any credit card that your friend can get from his bank. Very easy to do.

On the other hand, just upgrade your Paypal account. So Paypal charges $3 per $100. So you are out $15? Make him give you $515 instead. Or, just give him $485 back.

This is a bigger ordeal than it has to be, for sure.

You don't want me chiming-in since I'm against credit cards and borrowing, but oh well. My advice would be to tell your friend to go to his bank and withdrawal the CASH from his CHECKING account and bring it with him.

If he doesn't have the CASH to PAY FOR the things he wants to do, he shouldn't "BUY" them to begin with.

And the winner is... Maury!!!!

You really need to evaluate weather the trip is worth it or not when you can't come up with $500. Spending money before you have it is the #1 sign you are not good with finances.

It's taken me a LONG time to figure that out.

I agree.

"He's trying to get cash from his credit card?"

You either have credit or you don't, period.

Why does he need "to get cash" anyway? I was wondering about that.

JUST USE THE CREDIT CARD.

It's fairly simple, you know?

Also, did you invite this friend? If so, you should pick up the cost of things, for the most part. That's what a loving and caring friend who does the inviting does.

You can't buy certain things with credit.

I understand that borrowing is bad when you don't have cash, especially for a trip, but it's his choice.

What can't you buy with credit?

A hooker?

Seriously, what?

I don't know where you live, but where we live EVERYONE takes credit cards. Even McDonald's.

Now, I don't agree with running up the credit card.... But a few weeks ago, I bought a $200 item at a store on a credit card. A week later, I realized I didn't want that one and returned it. They gave me $200 cash back. I had my receipt. Actually it kind of annoyed me, cuz I KNOW I won't put that cash towards the credit card bill. Oh and actually I did the same thing at Best Buy last Christmas.

As I'm usually so mean to you, I'll take pity, and spell it out for you.

They want to get wasted on something other than alcohol.

That means a cash-deal, unless you're very well connected

I've seen some dealers here accept credit cards as a barter payment, they purchase something the value of the drugs in return they get the recipt and return it for a refund. Havent seen this work with hookers but I do know some hookers ok dont know them personally but have seen a couple hookers with Portable POS terminals LOL

Over here, supermarkets do cashback when you purchase stuff. They ring up your purchases and you say "I'd like £50 cashback please". They then add £50 to what they take off your card, and give you £50 in cash as 'change'.

£50 ($100) is usually the maximum, but just go through five times, buying a bag of crisps or a chocolate bar each time.

No charge on that, or at least nothing more than it'd cost to spend $500 at the supermarket.

$500 that he doesn't have is a bad idea. Especially off a credit card.

I am asuming this is happening in america, seeing as how we are talking about $, I am too lazy to look at the first post...

but I work at a grocery store, many of you have suggested this route, heres how it works at all the grocery stores in my area...

You can ONLY get cash back on a DEBIT card.... all credit cards do is pay for the items, I would ASSUME this is because the credit companies want the card holder to use THEIR HIGH INTEREST cash advance... but if you find a company willing to give you cash back then go for it...
