From Game Spot
TOKYO--According to retail sources, Nintendo will soon announce a new DS game produced by Japanese multimedia artist Toshio Iwai, best known for his Famicom music game, Otocky (1987). Called Electroplankton, the game is slated for release in Japan on April 7 at the price of 4,800 yen ($46).
Electroplankton is categorized as a "touchable media art" game that presents the player with "soothing music" and graphics on the DS's two screens. The game features 10 "digital planktons" that respond to gamers when they touch the screen or use the microphone. The planktons react by making different gestures and sounds of their own. The game also takes advantage of the DS's microphone by recording and playing back sounds and voices as tunes.
While details on gameplay are scarce, it's known that Electroplankton will include a number of classic 8-bit Famicom melodies, including those from Super Mario Bros.
The game will also have an "audience mode" in which it creates new musical tunes on its own. Electroplankton is slated to come bundled with a pair of headphones.

AT ANY RATE...
the DS has not let all the cats out of the bag yet. the PSP seems to be offering "the same" type of portable gaming that has always been offered.
the DS seems to be the one who is offering something from the norm.
to conclude, let's see who becomes the victor. it should be fun now that nintento has a true competitor.

I was at the EB Games store earlier today and they had warrio ware on the DS on display.
I wasnt impressed. The visuals looked like something out of paintbrush, and the sounds sounded like computer beeps (exageration). They need more games like mario64 DS, Ray man and metroid hunters that take advantage of the machine's 3D capabilities, as well as the touch screen and voice recognition feature.
I heard that Lucas arts is porting Monkey Island 3 to the DS, which seems fitting, as games like Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, etc...will look and play georgous on the DS. playing longer games like these during a break, saving it and getting back to the real world, would be nice.
But warrior ware is a disappointment...... i mean...'unrolling' toilet aper, making a 2D nose sneeze, slicling dripping snort from an anime' chick's nose.....not my idea of creativity. And imo, the game is more rediculious than it sounds... it could be succesful, but i didnt like it. I did like MP:Hunters demo.
It's about time the DS starts stretching it's legs with appropriate software. Heck, even a multiplayer version of Quake on this thing would be sweet..... it wont be 'new' and 'fresh', but this thing was built for multiplayer games like that. And they could implement that voice thing like in Halo that all the XBox geeks keep claiming is the best thing since sliced white bread.
My roommat also pointed out thta a version of starcraft or warcraft could be implemented rather well on the DS, imagine starcraft on a DS with 4-8 other ppl, in the same house or over the net, allies being able to communicate with the microphone, etc.. it could only work on the DS, and Nintendo needs to sell that to the developers, and consumers will bite even more than they already have. Nintendo will definately win over the hardcore gamers if they do it.
Cheers.

Ninty embrace online at last! Revolution WiFi details, plus DS online strategy confirmed
Following on from the deluge of Microsoft leaks and confirmations, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has outlined Nintendo's plans for the future in his keynote speech at GDC.
Iwata, who was recently quoted as saying he believed customers didn't want online gaming, has announced that the DS online system will launch later this year, with free access to the system available via WiFi hotspots and home wireless routers.
Iwata confirmed the online system is already in place, and that Nintendo is ready to "provide users with a link to other players across the country, or around the world".
While many DS owners may be without an in-home wireless network, Iwata's news that Nintendo's new console, codenamed Revolution, will feature "built-in WiFi protocols" will solve this problem.
Plugging directly into the user's home broadband socket, Revolution will act as a router, supplying internet access to multiple devices, including DS, via WiFi, providing the handheld with free online gaming capabilities. In comparison, it has been rumoured that Sony's PSP will come with a subscription fee.
In terms of graphical capabilities, with the IBM-developed Revolution CPU (codenamed Broadway) and the ATI-produced graphics chipset (codenamed Hollywood), Revolution is set to "deliver game experiences not possible to date".
ATI president and CEO Dave Orton enthused: "As the leading graphics provider, ATI are committed to delivering exceptional visual performance that enables consumers to interact with new and visually compelling digital worlds. ATI are proud to support Nintendo's innovative contributions to gaming".
Nintendo have always expressed an intention to make Revolution's gaming experience totally different to that of Sony and Microsoft's next-gen offerings. In light of these claims, Iwata was keen to allay any fears developers may have.
"Even though the game experience will be very different for players, developing for Revolution will be familiar," Iwata claimed. "There will be no steep new learning curve. It's a place where the best ideas, not the biggest budget, will win."
With over four million DS units shipped to Japan and the US to date, this figure is expected to rise to six million by the end of March, thanks to the launch of the machine in Europe.

Wario Ware is supposed to look like that. It's a stylistic thing. And, as of right now, it's the only good title on the DS. It's a ton of fun.
Is it worth buying a system for? Hell no. But it is a nice way to waste 5 minutes.

Really happy to hear the plans for animal crossing too. The DS is the perfect console for that game!

I played WarioWare today in the store. It seemed like the perfect kind of game for a handheld. I was surprised at how fast-paced it is. It's not a game I could play for a long period of time, but it'd be great fun in short bursts.

ayou've got to be kidding me. The DS is quite possibly the worst games console ever!! APART FROM BEING cheap LOOKING, GIMMICKY, an LAME, IT IS ALSO INFERIOR TO THE PSP. YOU HAVE TO BE a MaSOCHIST TO ENJOY THE DS, BECAUSE THE GRAPHICS ARE PAINFULLY SHITTY, AND JUST LOOK AT THE STATE OF THE GAMES THAT THEY PRODUCED FOR IT. SCUM OF THE EARTH, AND IF YOU BUY ONE, it's YOUR OWN FAULT

Hmmm...this dude just makes me glad im not in his camp of fanboys. lol. Seems to be a stereotype of PSP/PS2 and XBox fanboys on message boards ...theyre just plain uncivilized when compared to the Nintendo fanboys. Theres another similarity between apple and Nintendo lol...it's like comparing Wintel fanboys to mac fanboys lol.

Funny you mention it. Age of Empires 2 is being ported to the DS. (I almost crapped my pants when I saw a Microsoft game was coming to DS).
I also wasn't impressed by Wario Ware. It felt like Nintendo had let loose a bunch of monkeys to code a game.

cool. Personally, im waiting for old school games like Monkey Island , Full Throttle and Day of The Tentacle to get onto the DS. IF DoTT or FT or Monkey Island make it to the DS, ill definately pick one up.

Musta come from gaia or something -- you see reasoning for mac bashing JUST like that there...
Even with a generally slicker looking piece of hardware that sony has, I still will be sticking to Nintendo's side of things I think -- the idealism behind the Revolution system has me sold, so I can hardly wait to see prototypes and all...
And unlike Sony, Nintendo so far seems to be fast to deliver -- kinda reminds me of Apple vs MS -- by the time MS releases longhorn, 10.5's gonna be ready! Sony likes to hype in much the same way, and then once it is finally out, it's nice, but Nintendo's already at the drawing board..
Odd because it took them 15 years to go from the gameboy to the gameboy advance, hahahahaa.

now that i have seen a PSP close-up, i change my tune
big ass PSP screen instantly makes it a "different" portable offering
the DS looks dinky compared to it

Well, i admire the idealism as well...to an extent, and to me Apple and Nintendo seem to have idealism based on 'real' needs and wants. For example... while most geeks and nerds were trying to get the bestest and fastest command prompt interface they could for their computers, here's a company that saw that 'actual'/'real' work needs a more intuitive interface, not just big numbers.... and you know what....they delivered. Heck we can credit that idealism for making computers as widespread and as productive as they are today.
The analogy for Nintendo being....we're pretty close to photo realisitc graphics(except for the PS2), so we have the bestest fastest graphics, so we can improve it a little....but chances are the human eye wont notice it(at least in interactive gameplay). And if you disagree, chances are this next generation will have more than ample graphical power. But there is obviously more than one dimension to gaming...and whether we care to admit it or not, they have been neglected since the days of the NES. It's nice to see that Nintendo has recognized the potential for improvement in other areas and are working to cater to them. Now whether or not they actually deliver is yet to be seen... as ive said before if it's totally weird ill probably switch to another platform or something..... but so far they havent disappointed.
While graphics whores and geeks care about the specs of the 'box', and the polygon-pushing power, well all i can say is...theyre missing out... just like Wintel/DOS-diehards missed out. And by the time they catch up, Nintendo like Apple will be yet another step further. Leaders and followers eh ?
OH well... my point being. Idealism alone is no where enough.... there's got to be a need/want to be satisified, and the solution needs to be elegant, and delivered just right to be addopted.
Cheers
