Hey, I have some panther install CDs from the copy I bought before I got my PowerBook. Anyway, when my HD was dying I tried erasing the HD and starting over, problem was it said it needed a previous version of OS X to install over. I didn't have my SW Restore disks with me either. I finally got it working with another guy's PowerBook. But I also know a girl on campus who would like to go upgrade to OS X. That said she only has OS 9, and by the looks of it without at least X.0 she won't be able to install anything beyond OS 9. So aside from buying a new Mac or finding my old X.0 disks... how would I install onto HD with no previous version of OS X?

OK, how is it illegal if someone has paid for a copy of OS X to not be able to install it? I had my install disks but not my restore disks. (I'd bought the install disks before my PowerBook). So how would you go about installing. Or say I wipe my HD on my iMac which is old. Is there any way to get OS X on there without finding my X.0 disks?

OK, through all that I got two things.

1) You have Panther Upgrade discs that require a full version of OS X to install on.
2) The only full version of OS X you've owned is 10.0 and you lost them.
3) You want to install Panther without the lost discs.

Is this correct? Then what is the point of:

4) Some girl wants to pirate OS X.

That is the "legality" thing Randman was talking about.

Just hold on until Tiger is released, then buy it.

Well I got the Panther Box. I don't think there is anything other than upgrade disks available (unless I'm wrong). So I'm just wondering even if this girl bought a copy of Panther or Tiger, how would you go about installing it without a previous version of OS X on the HD? From the sounds of it if she wanted to install it she'd have to pirate a previous version of OS X just to be able to run OS X.
Or am I just doing something horribly awfully wrong and have no clue what I'm doing when installing OS X? This is just something I'd like to know the installs that I tried the week of my dying HD were really frustrating and I found myself wondering why the heck Apple makes it such a hassle even if you've got the freaking CD.

If you have the install and restore discs, it's not a hassle to install the OS on your Mac. But don't blame Apple if you can't keep the discs with you, or if trying to share copies of the OS (which you still didn't clear up if you are trying that or not).

Sorry, but isn't this what the Mac OS forum is for?

If she buys a copy of Panther or Tiger, she has a copy of Mac OS X. You can't even buy upgrade discs for Panther. In fact, I think the only upgrade Apple sold was for 10.1. For 10.2 and 10.3, however, they may have offered upgrade discs, though, to new Mac owners who bought their Macs within a month of the new version shipping.

So if she actually buys it, she does not need an older version of the OS to make it work.

Do you have a boxed copy of Panther? I got the educational version for Christmas. And it would not install on my PowerBook without a previous version of OS X present.

No I don't have a boxed copy. My Panther came with my iBook. Your problem makes no sense to me because buying OS X is buying OS X. You get the OS, not an upgrade.

From the online Apple Educational Store:
Requirements [for Panther]:
Macintosh computer with PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor; built-in USB; and 128MB of physical RAM.

1) Video conferencing requires a 600MHz or faster PowerPC G3, a PowerPC G4, or a PowerPC G5 processor; broadband Internet access (100 Kbps or faster); and a compatible FireWire DV camera or web camera.
2) Internet access requires a compatible service provider; iDisk requires a .Mac account; fees may apply.
3) Processor upgrade cards are not supported.
It says nothing about a previous version of OS X.

Exactly. So I'm wondering how the heck I can install without a previous version of OS X. It seems to require it though. If you have a second Mac you don't need try erasing the HD and installing OS X unless your disks are different than mine it won't work.

I have a boxed copy and it's the full install. Version 10.3.5 fyi. So somehow you got screwed with your copy.
