Ok this is kinda a study. I want to see how many people here on MacNN who know they are over weight to answer how much sleep they get. And those that are skinny to answer the same thing.

isn't this just a bit polarizing? is everybody you know either "over weight" or "skinny"? or is your study not concerned with people who have "normal" weight?
just curious...

This study is quite conclusive.

At 18 votes, I think the only conclusion to be drawn is that Athens has been

I see nothing and I don't get what Athens is looking for. Sleep primarily depends on age. The older you get the less sleep you need. Weight also depends on age. The older you get the more weight you put on. So I wouldn't be surprised if you could find some negative correlation between sleep and weight, but that would tell nothing. Maybe if you'd factor out age it would, but that's not asked for in this poll.

An unscientific poll is probably not going to lead to much of a conclusion. Nevertheless, studies published at the end of 2004 did show a correlation between sleep and weight gain (those who slept more had a "better" leptin hormone regulation and thus were less hungry during the day than those who slept less). This story made the rounds on all the news stations for a while.
Here's a link to a CBS News report on the studies:

and the trend is in Canada too... and looking at the results sleep dose not seem to affect weight to as much of a degree as I thought. Oh well

i get little sleep 3 - 5 hours a day. but i would not account for me being overweight(6'0 205 lbs) to my eating habits. its not that i eat a lot its that when i do eat it is not the most healthy food and sometimes late at night. this is mostly due to my schedule tho.

I want to start another poll, just not so soon after this one though related to Water habits, see if those that drink alot of water are better off then the ones that drink less and the other type of drinks. I was expecting clearer results on the sleep one. i know the water one will show good results.

How the hell can anyone function on 3-5 hours of sleep a night? Maybe for a week or two, but consistently for months and months? If you can get by on that little sleep, you're one lucky SOB. You must get a lot of work done.

And you are sure age was controlled in that study?

In the first study the subjects were 22 years old and healthy. Another study showed similar results. Note, these studies aren't "proof" of anything but this fact: lack of sleep results in decreased leptin levels.
And since leptin deficiency leads people to eat more than they need (leptin controls when you feel "full"), the study showed that lack of sleep may lead to increased eating in general, and thus possibly more weight gain (weight gain is merely a function of calories in, via eating, and out, via energy expenditure).
And another study has shown that people who consistently get fewer than seven hours a night have a higher BMI (Body Mass Index) on average.
This doesn't mean that getting more sleep will make you lose weight. It just means that on average, people who sleep more tend to weigh less.
Also related: a study published earlier this year showed that thinner people tend to "fidget" while they rest. This continuous movement actually amounts to a very measurable calorie burn over the day. Some overweight people in the study had the ability to sit almost perfectly still for hours.
Interesting stuff.

I functioned for almost five years, on five hours, when I worked 80 hours (two jobs). I don't think I'd do it again, but I'm still around. I normally get 6 - 8 hours now, but last night I was up until 4 a.m., and woke up at 9 a.m., and I'm fine.

hehe funny thing is CNN just did a small story about it.
Those that are night owls tend to be depressed more and higher weight. Those that wake up early tend to hand stress more and thinner. Less sleep did also affect weight but it was more the night owl person then the lack of sleep. I think I will do 2 more polls this week one related to water and one related to hours night owl or day person.

I've not slept more than 3-4 hrs /night in over 10 years (with the occasional 10-12hr bender on holidays and such, also I slept constantly when I had cancer). I just wake up and I'm ready to go.

I usually sleep from 2am-6am, sometimes I get up as early as 5 or 5:30. Doesn't matter to me, I like late night and mornings.

Insomniacs such as myself do it all of the time. I'm not as bad as I was a year ago, but I still can't sleep more than 2-4 hours (with help). If I've had a late, busy night, I can sleep a couple more hours (this usually happens on the weekends).

I get at least 8 hours every night, and I'm on the thin side.

6'4" and 225 lbs.
I sleep no more than 6 hours each night, depending upon how often (and loudly) my wife farts.

Are you looking to be published in a scientific journal? Maybe work on your spelling first?
Oh, and studies like this probably have been done before; have you asked Google?
My sleep habits have changed dramatically, but my weight has not. BMI gives me a healthily skinny number. For a few years, several ago, I'd get little more than 3-4 hours of sleep most days of the week. Currently, I get 7-10 every night (8-9 on average).

The other night Tigger ran us all out of the bedroom. Damn, was some of the most obnoxious smelling stuff imaginable. I just stayed up and didn't even bother going back to bed.
