Dear Google,

I love you too. You left your pants at my place last night.

Seems pretty simple actually, although I can't say I would ever have thought of it.

I've thought of it just never had an idea how to do it. How do you make the image grow? It's obviously not an animated gif. And it moves so smoothly.

Okay, is Google's source actually just one big long line, or is that just how Safari is opting to show it? It's REALLY hard to reverse-engineer code you can't read!

They deliberately obfuscate their code to protect their IP, I think.

Is it just me, or have they removed this search interface from their site?

And there's no archive.org page since google blocks robots. I wish someone would have saved a screen shot.

WOW, why would theytake it off so soon! Okay, I know the reasons, but surly they would have thought of them before hand. I even bookmarked... that sucks.

Damn, that was fast. I did download the code while it was up, although I wish I had downloaded the images as well.

Well I didn't see it. Sounds like they had a dock with magnification and everything going on. That's cool. I made a website a couple years ago for a MUG and it looked like OS X. I had a cool dock made with PNGs. I had the rollover text, too. Even got the transparency matched down to the percent. Did it with the windows, menubar, the works. Good quality OS interface ripoff, if I say so myself. Just didn't do the magnification thing. I wouldn't have had a clue how to do that.

It probably was very interesting since it was gone so quickly.

Not anymore; the site's been down for quite awhile (the MUG in question dissolved). I have an archive of it, somewhere, but without the backend database, it'd be tough to get it up and going again.

I hope not, considering how much Steve uses and swears by Google, including making it the default search engine in Safari.

Well, I had to dig through my archives to find it. I knew I still had this site somewhere. I put it up on my current hosting. Unfortunately, it's not the great version I once had because this version uses jpgs. I still have a bunch of pngs, but not a 1-1 correspondence so I'd have to work the code up a bit.

My old site

It's kinda ugly but that's cause OS X evolved and that UI didn't evolve with it. Imagine that site with all the shadows, the dock, etc, being transparent pngs. I once had it so you could choose your desktop and even have pictures under it. I really thought that was cool at the time. I still have the photoshop files.

I have a newer archive of the files somewhere (from just before the HD crash, I think) - msg me if you want it.

I think you gave me the newest archive. I had just stopped using pngs during the last versions. We were supporting IE by having jpgs and it became too much management to keep pngs and jpgs both going. So I have most pngs for things, but some of the last crazy-coding I did I don't have pngs to correspond. I'd be 99% sure you don't have them either.

BTW, that code of mine is pretty ugly. The HTML is ugly. The PHP is ugly. Yuk.

This looked awesome! I hope Google does something like this in the future! Much more fun than just some boring static text links...

Apple has sought patent protection for the "Genie Effect" used in the Dock.

Isn't the "Genie Effect" what you see when you minimize a window?

Yepper. That patent would have nothing to do with this at all.
