George Lucas is such a fan of the latest 3-D technology that he is planning to remaster all of the "Star Wars" films for rerelease in 3-D.
Appearing as part of a sextet of high-profile directors promoting 3-D and digital cinema at film industry convention ShoWest on Thursday, Lucas said he hadn't yet committed to a precise schedule but hoped to have the first film ready for the 30th anniversary of the original "Star Wars" movie in 2007 and that he would then rerelease one "Star Wars" film per year in 3-D.

I'm not sure that I even care about 3-D.

3D Jarr-Jarr? Great.
"Now mesa can see you and yousa can see me, in bigga 3D. Weh!"
How about George Lucas try something original. Or is it his mission in life to see how many different ways he can feed us Star Wars?
I'm a huge fan, but even I think this is just too much.

Oooh, don't be so negative, it doesn't suit you !! But I agree with the statement. It's ridiculous. Lucas is ridiculous.

Although i give Star Wars the respect it deserves for the little history it has brought to the american culture. This plan to re-release the movies again is ridicules. I mean how much money is lucas going to get out of these films? Is this his only story in his mind? Why cant he make another story and make that 3-D? This actually reminds me about hot wheels for some reason. It is always really the same car, but with a new paint job and collectors go nuts over them.
Makes me wonder what lucas is going to come out with next after his 3-D fiasco. Paper Star Wars? Ha ha.
On another note, i sure hope that matrix movies dont end up following the lucas trend.
anyway, overall the idea does fascinate me though. I guess for hardcore fans its a nice twist. so i give it a

So which would you rather see (or which is less offensive)
The digital remakes of the original 3 movies with the Solo/Greedo changes, no Ewoks, etc.
or
3-D versions of the "original" 3 movies
I know it'll be the worst of both worlds with 3-D versions of the digital remakes...

This is the main reason I haven't watched Episode VI on my new DVD set yet. I have heard that they changed the appearance of Annakin in the final "ghost" sequence. I'm just not ready for that.
For the record, I first saw Star Wars (later known as "Episode IV: A New Hope") just a few days after I graduated from high school, and while the "improvements" George made to the original are pretty, my memory of how that movie affected me is still stronger than what I get from watching the "improved" version. To me, the "special editions" and later releases are overdone. Too much detail that's not necessary. it's all busy instead of letting you watch the action.
I shoudl also mention that I hated it when they edited release 1.1 of Star Wars so that, among other things, the Storm Troopers chasing Han and Chewbaca through the Death Star no longer say "Close the blast doors, close the blast doors!" and then as Han and Chewie escape they say "Open the blast doors, open the blasts doors!" Yes, I'm that much of a fan.

I feel the same way you do.
This changed ALL of Star Wars for me when I saw the special edition Star Wars in the theater. It changes the whole character of Han for the rest of the sequels.
Han Solo became a coward.
I too am glad to get that off my chest. I feel better than I have in years.

Can someone explain to me this 'Greedo shooting first' thing? I've seen the films but can't really remember this as a pivotal moment.
Also, how would one go about making film shot in 2D thirty years ago into 3D?? CG? Surely there just isn't the raw informatio there from which to make a 3D image?

In the Cantina (in Ep. IV), the two are sitting arguing at a table. Greedo is a threat to bring Han into Jabba to collect the bounty. Han realizes that Greedo's gotta be taken care of now or else he'll become a pain in the ass later, so he shoots him and kills him.
In the redone version, Greedo shoots Han (for some stupid reason), misses (again, for some stupid reason, they're sitting at the same table), and Han shoots back and kills him.

Yeah, replacing Hayden Christensen with Sebastian Shaw in that sequence makes zero sense and is a very poor attempt to unify the six films. Shame on them!
My two mosted hated changes are the addition of that painfully stupid "music video" in Jabba's palace (Episode VI) that looks like a reject from the Muppet Show, and changing Vader's line (Episode V) following the fight with Luke from the angry growl of "Bring ... my ... shuttle" to the rather bloodless "Inform my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival". The latter doesn't even sound like it was voiced by James Earl Jones but rather overdubbed by somebody else. It's one of the clumsiest and strangest changes Lucas made.

I think this was a feeble revisionist attempt to render Han is a more politically correct light, a more palatable, less violent, more kid-friendly Han. Pathetic. The original was so much better, and unfortunately the differences are not really all that minor.

But he's a flippin' PIRATE! A transporter of contraband, in a heavily armed privateer vessel. As Johnny Depp so eloquently put it-"Pirate!" He's SUPPOSED to shoot first when we meet him because he's that kind of guy. Later he is supposed to mellow out and become less "shoot first" and more considerate-though his line in Ep VI "Hey, it's me!" is still classically Han.
