I'm one of those government employees that y'all love to hate, except that I buy macs instead of peecees.

Anyways I have around fifteen grand left in my budget that I must spend or I lose it and penalized that amount next year.

Soooooo here's what I have ordered......

2.5 Dualie

2 gigs of Ram

250 mg HD

That expensive @ss video card

30" Cinema Display

Adobe Creative Suite/w Acrobat Pro

Quark 6.5

Office 2004 X.1

Apple Production Suite (for me) it was only $499!

And for the budget killer....

A Canon XL2 Pro Digital Camcorder!

Do you do anything where that is a justified purchase or is it just a new toy?

I run the printing department for an entire school district of 20,000 students with 29 schools.

Yeah, it's justified and I'm replacing the B/W G3 that I bought new back in '99.

The video camera is going to be available for check-out by qualified operators.

I forgot to mention the color copier, but that's not comingout of my budget but it will be in my department under my jurisdiction.

Would have listed it under "troubleshooting software" myself.

Unless you need the speed, Boomstick, you should consider getting a somewhat slower PowerMac and adding more hard drives and a digital still camera. You should also consider getting a scanner and a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Considering the last Mac that he purchased for his department was a B&W way back in 1999 he did the right thing. Extra storage can be purchased with his next budget easier than getting a faster machine. Most likely it will be another 6 years before another one can be purchased. Get as high end as possible now instead of needing more later.

Change the 30" moniter and video card to a 3rd party 20" screen and you could have bought an iMac or three for the kids as well.

It seems pretty extravagant for a school.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Should have gotten the Sony HDV cam. Same price (or cheaper) than the XL2. You'll have the muscle to edit it, so you might as well get it.

I'm not allowed to spend my budget on the schools.

They have lottery money and Title1 funding for computers.

There are onle 3 macs in the whole system as we have to keep the IT/MIS department in jobs.

I have a good firewire scanner already that I just bought this past year when my HP 4c went bad.

The sad thing is that the amount you would have been "penalized" probably would have gone to some departments that really needed money.

Probably one of those schools has to putt along with a couple of Performa 6400s because they have barely any budget.

You don't know this. It's hypothetically possible, but then it could have also gone to fuel a director's prostitute habit.

Yeah, but it's just annoying, being on the other side. At the university I go to, our department has to scrape by for everything, and then you hear about certain other departments that deliberately go out and make unnecessary purchases just so they can get rid of excess money and not get their budget cut.

Lottery money going to schools is mostly ********. In a few states, like Illinois (pay attention school district employee rickey, ) lottery money is earmarked to make up for shortages in school district budgets. If there is no shortage or the lottery funds exceed the amount that is needed to make the budget even the extra money goes into a general use account that legislators are allowed to spend on other projects.

The whole way budgets at schools and universities are done is screwed up. Instead of redirecting surplus or unused funds they let departments spend the cash or lose it.
I find it rather funny that the people who are going to complain come the fall that there is not enough money for their schools, department, or program do absolutely nothing to remedy the problems in the spending process. In fact you make it worse by spending money on things you really don’t need or are unnecessary because its free money.

I haven't had a new computer in 6 years and all of the other departments upgrade every 2 just for the comuters to go to surplus to be auctioned off for $20 apiece.

I have one printing press that is barely functional and in desperate need of replacement, but I'm not allowed to save surplus money for the purchase. I have to lobby for SPLOST funding, but replacing ageing vehicles have taken precedent thus far.
A small single color Ryobi duplicator is $30,000 and the one I need is $55,000.

Wether I need the computer or not is a moot point as I'm leaving the school district in June to take an instructional position at the local college teaching preps and press in their prinnting/reprographics program.
