Thanks.
My university decided that TV is bad for all us college students so we don't have cable, otherwise I would have turned on CNN.

A shooting Monday afternoon on the Red Lake Indian Reservation has left eight people dead.
FBI Special Agent Paul McCabe says there were two shootings taking place about one hour apart.
The first took place at the residence of the shooter’s grandparents. The grandfather is a former police officer and it is believed the shooter used his guns. Both victims were taken to a hospital, where they died.
The shooter then headed to the Red Lake High School where he killed six people, including a teacher and a security guard.
McCabe said he believed the shooter was among the dead, he wouldn’t say more than that there was evidence indicating the shooter was dead.

Completely off-topic and I apologise for it ahead but....
I was at a party with a bunch of teacher friends the other day and someone said that there are some schools in the States where the teacher stands at the front of the class in a section that is caged off from the students and that the teachers have a separate entrance/exit to the class and that all of the door's locks are controlled from a central security area. All to keep the teachers safe. Is this true? No state name was given but to me it sounds extreme plus unworkable plus why would a teacher work in an environment that was so hostile?

We are living in a dark age. It's not just confined to this one guy, or that other guy who went crazy in a church, or anyone else elsewhere. Society today is in a degenerated situation. But not many are brave enough to admit to it, but we'd rather rationalize our way out of it.
Pathetically depressing.

Damn right. It's just a shame when we pursue our hobby within the comfy confines of our nation. We need to get our collective act together and start killing more foreigners. They're the real problem.

This is just terrible.
I cannot imagine how that community feels.
Is anyone here a teenager or just out of teenaged years and can tell us what kind of angst today's youth have so that we have some way of understanding this? Because it seems like they are more and more violent - why?

Maybe someone should have been monitoring his internet access. Like many in here...
Really though, his life was terrible with the story of his parents and all. Someone should have been counseling the lad. A tragic story.

A very sad, and horrific incident! School violence, however, is in fact down over the last five years; unfortunately, some people are going to grab on to the sensationalism of this heinous act, and go running around like Chicken Little.
A fast growing problem nationally is that of gangs, but that doesn't seem to grab as much attention as single, isolated incidents, because too many thrive on sensationalism.

When I was a teenager I would frequently fantasize about going on a killing spree in my school. I really hated a lot of the people there. But fantasizing and doing it are a million miles apart. I would never ever ever have done anything like that.
But I can see how someone who is mentally unstable, in a worse situation than I was, and had access to guns could possible be pushed so far as to snap and go on a shooting spree.

You joke..
But seriously, some moron will go on a rant about how this means we need MORE gun laws.
When the guy who did this broke many gun laws to do what he did.
Yes, guns will be blamed instead of realizing what the real problem is.
Another thing that will happen, people will say "I didn't see this coming"
When in just about EVERY case of this happening, it usually involves the attacker being teased at school, and having parents that ignore their activities.
The problem isn't guns.

And, in this case, the shooter himself proclaiming to his friends that he'd love to go and " shoot up the school" (sorry for the MSNBC link, got it from another board).
Guns in themselves aren't the problem. But the facility of obtaining guns in the US currently is a contributing factor to some people getting an easy opportunity to carry out a fantasy they would never have carried out had they not had the easy opportunity provided by the facility of obtaining guns (that was a very bad sentence).
A complete attitude-change towards guns, moving away from the feeling that a gun is something fairly natural to have in a normal home, could possibly go quite some way in preventing some people from picking up a gun and doing something with it that they regret.

Obviously the solution to this problem is to outlaw law enforcement officers from having guns. If cops didn't have guns, this never would have happened!

And why is it that this story has been all over several UK news sources, but I haven't seen squat on US sources? I've known since yesterday the full details of the story including where it happened, how many people died, and that he killed himself afterwards.

i think it's been everywhere ...
locally ... www.startribune.com
nationally ... http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/03/22/sch...ing/index.html
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7259823/
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/...shooting_x.htm
every news source had the story on their main page
or ... if you want to look into it it may be because it occured on a reservation. much like when (pardon me for forgetting their names but i can't look them up right now) the young girl was abducted from an upper class suburb in salt lake city at the same time a girl from milwaukee in a poorer neighborhood was abducted but that did not get any news coverage. many speculated that it was because she was african-american and the mothers boyfriend had a criminal record while the family in utah was white, upper/middle class, married household etc.
its up to your own opinions and perceptions.

Easy now! It was obviously meant as a joke, even I saw that, and I'm none too quick at getting written jokes. He even said himself that he was taking a swipe at the stereotypes.
Just because the subject of a thread is a horrible one doesn't necessarily mean you can't add some humour to the thread itself.
