The new Xserve cluster, says Dr. Shinpaugh, is "a very beautiful-looking machine, a combination of black racks and brushed aluminum, finished very nicely. Then you have the nice blue blinky lights. A lot of people who come by like to see blinky lights so they can say, 'Oh, there is something going on.'"

Ha... that's priceless! Blinking lights are good though... I mean life would suck without them. Some people that lack any kind of understanding need those lights to assure themselves that something is indeed going on. Wait... the article just said that. damn.

Ok i'm done.

“In academia and the scientific community, most people use a UNIX-based environment,” he says.”
I must have been going to the wrong engineering schools, because here 90% uses Windows.

Or is he talking about computer science?

The biotech/molecular biology people, as well as a lot of the physicists and chemists, etc. seem to like *nix.

Computer Science, Life Sciences, Physics, etc.

He's also not talking about the machine on your desk you use to write papers and read your email, but the computers that are used to do the actual work and research.

Right. The computers that are used to do the crunching work. Space shots, building bridges, modeling jet engine airflow, stuff like that.
He can be fixed -- you can't.

The best feature, is that Virginia Tech chose to use the Xserve.

Our engineering school requires all engineers know UNIX and not Windows. All engineers are required to take a UNIX class, and CS people are required to take a higher level UNIX programming class.

Fixed. Interesting that happened though. It was a straight cut and paste using Firefox on Windows, and it displayed fine. Got home, and the quotes were all fscked up on the Mac.

I guess it's due to differences in the displayed fonts between the platforms. Weird.
