Toshiba has today announced a new lithium ion battery, which, it claims, can recharge 80% of the battery's energy capacity in just one minute, 60 times faster than the other lithium ion cells. It takes an unspecified 'few' more minutes for a complete recharge. The battery has a long life cycle, losing only 1% of its capacity after 1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging. Due to be launched next year, it will initially be used to power hybrid electric vehicles but could be used for smaller devices in future, such as mobile phones and digital cameras.

the prototype (small) was 600 mAh. The current PowerBook is 4000 mAh. Not sure if they can have multiple cells that will increase capacity.

I was reading "The Watchmen" not too long ago, and there was this scene where a guy pulls up in an electric car, and was looking for a place to plug in really quick to get him to his next stop, and I thought to myself: I hope its not like that, having to stop to recharge ever few miles.

It would be convenient, I guess. In a couple years, I'll be trying to get out the door for 15 minutes to go somewhere with my wife, and as she's walking out the door she'll say: Oh, one minute, i have to charge my phone really quick! To me though, the ultimate in batteries won't have to be charged ever, or would recharge themselves through automated means, sort of how the iPod recharges itself when its hooked to your computer (which if you use it daily, and you work at a computer, it would stay charged)

I always expect my new digital camera to be charged when I disconnect it from the computer.

probably already is possible for batteries to do that, but why would the battery companies want to sell them, they'd lose tons of money because you wouldn't need to replace your batteries all the time

Yes, but it's the short-sighted companies that would think that. The smart ones would realize the increase in sales from stealing business over the others, and new business from all of the new cordless products that could be made.

If an electric car could be recharged in the same amount of time that it takes to fill a gas tank, they probably would be a lot more popular. A gas station would need only a metered electrical outlet to gain new business.

Li-poly are the highest capacity right now.

We are using cell phone batteries to power electric R/C airplanes and getting 30-45 minute flight times using brushless AC motors.
