Notice the picture they used in this article. Is that or is that not a macintosh behind the word microsoft.

Is this just a mistake or is the CNN graphics department playing a joke?

From CNN:
Microsoft Corp. will build software for managing identities into Windows in order to chop up security by giving hackers and scammers more control over people's personal information, the world's largest software maker said Tuesday.

Looks like one of the early Power Macs.

You know how they say that the latest Windows == an old Mac?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I'd say definitely an Apple monitor, not sure about the CPU. Typical though.

The box looks like a Power Mac 7200 - 7600, etc.

I know that's an apple monitor. I owned one. 14" with stereo speakers built in AND a headphone out. That was very cool at the time. The flop down panel in the front and the off button were total crap, cheap loose-fitting plastic.

I'm guessing somebody did it on purpose. You're a graphics guy bored in your cubicle, forced to live in atlanta, you finally get to have a little fun, the boss will never know.

I don't rule out a mistake though. It's a mid 90's box, apple still owned the graphics market. I'd bet macs are disproportionately represented in stock photos like this because of who was producing them. Especially boxes from this time period.

Is there any was to know from the jpeg file which platform it was produced on?

thats an old powermac from the 7000 series but they had the same form factor of the IIvx so it could be one of those also. although the monitor is from the 7000 series era.

From the 7200 on, they looked pretty much like the Beige G3, which had more rounded corners than the machine in that picture.

Looks to me like a 7100. That would be consistent with when that model of monitor was available from Apple.

No, it definitely is a Mac. I have that exact same monitor - it's a 14" multiscan - and the floppy drive is very distinctive Apple. Also the CD drive is recessed - unusual in a PC that age.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Microsoft makes software for the Mac, and has for some time.

This happens ALL the time. The graphic designers are normally on Macs and they use clipart which 90% of the time is Macs. Only Mac Nerds like us would notice or care anyway.

it doesn't degrade the illustration either

the point of the pic was to show technology. whether it is a mac or pc is a moot point. microsoft makes office for macs and owns virtual PC. it would not mean much IMO even if they showed a blueberry imac, it would cause less confusion if it is indeed generic like it is.
